So I'm looking at finally getting a new TV. Time to replace the 11 yr old 65" 1080 Visio.

I'm mainly looking at either the Samsung S90F 77" or the LG C5 77"

Anyone have thoughts about those or other in the 77" range? I'd like to be in the 83-85" range but the jump in cost for OLED is just too much. At the same time I also am going to be getting a new audio setup, being most likely the Samsung HWQ990F soundbar. (Which reminds me I need to offload my Polk audio speakers 4 satellites, 1 center and a sub, if anyone interested)

So Samsung? LG? Other? I'm obviously looking at OLED as the TV is going into the basement that has no natural light, but if people have suggestions for otherwise I am open to other things.

Never been truly happy with any sound bar I have tried. Better than the tv speakers but always worse than a dedicated speakers.

Even the $10 garage sale speakers I picked up do better than the sound bar I was using in the basement.

I do suggest however swinging by visions and looking at a ultra short throw laser projector. The "Ambient Light Rejecting" screens used with them are not smooth they have a texture to them

The overhead lights hit the top flat surface but image is projected on the downward facing surface.

You might still prefer the OLED in the end but at the kind of price range your in I think they are at least worth looking at in person. They are not like overheads we have known over the years.

It is not a huge area and well looking for something much more streamlined than before. Plus the current stereo receiver died during the move so I have to get something. And I do agree that cheap soundbars aren't all that great. But the one I am looking at is consistently rated as the best (or one of the best) out there. It is a soundbar with rear satellites and a sub, so really only pulling the front left and right in a little bit compared to if I had a receiver and speakers.

As for the projector I have thought about that before, but wasn't sure how it would fair vs OLED. Something to think about. Any thoughts on OLED vs the hi-end led tech? Anyone have either the S90 or C5?

Soundboard are a huge no-no for me. Listened to one once, the "virtual surround nonsense" just sounds like put of phase echos and reverb to me (which is kinda what they are).

Last time I got a new setup, I got myself an old Bose acoustimas 5 system, and low profile Marantz amp (both used). The tiny cube speakers work very well for directional audio, and the bose system of sending more of the low mids and bass to one larger sub unit work surprisingly well.

That's what Id suggest going for, unless you absolutely have a tiny space or budget limitations preventing any other option.

LG or Sony would be my go to at the moment. I've never tried a soundbar, if you have the room you can score some wildly good speakers on marketplace these days.

Well I would not say this is "virtual surround", the rear speakers each have 3 separate drivers, up, front and side firing, it has a dual 8" sub, and the soundbar part at the front has 6 drivers facing forward and then 4 facing out to the sides on an angle and then 2 more facing up. So no this is not a basic plain soundbar that has a single run of drivers facing forward trying to fake surround.

Space wise it is in basement and we only have 11' from back of couch to front of tv. This way I only have to worry about mounting the rear speakers with a couple wall mounts behind and to the side of the couch (about 10' apart give or take) and then depending on if I wall mount the tv or not I can always wall mount the main soundbar part too.

But really more interested in thoughts about the TV aspect, not the sound.

The OLED will likely look better than the projectors but mentioned them strictly due to the size difference and comparable prices. The visions on West end had one on the floor as a demo in the back room with the receivers.

Do you know what's wrong with the receiver? Sometimes just needs a new fuse.

Oled still wins for blacks out of everything, but the others are just more and more compeditive

Nope, I mean it might just need a fuse that is possible. I really should open it up and see, but then again I have gotten wife approval for new stuff, so don't think I want to fix the old stuff. But as it is there is no juice, just zero sign of life in it when plugging in.

Was at Visions, just a bit ago and well a couple things, one that soundbar is even better than I thought, it has good bass and the sound is so damn clear and that is even at really loud volume. It really is damn good. And looked at the TVs and well the LG and the Samsung really look basically the same, light years ahead of what I am used to. If I do the Samsung they will swing me a deal for bundling them both, so I think that is what I will end up doing, at least think so. Have a few more days to make up my mind but unless I can find a better deal I think it will be the 77" S90F.
