Work in progress DIY Networked Attached Storage

Had to go into the adapter to change from 2.5G to 5G on my main PC but I'm now getting my 5G (ish) transfers between the two pcs. :)

Fake 4090s? Yep. Thats the state of the world right now...

CC has a horrible rep these days, especially if you're not shopping in person. My experience with ordering from them for my most recent PC build was crap from start to finish on several different orders. Apparently it's a lot better if you've got a local store to use, but their online store...

Well.... I do have 2 NVMe slots..... Maybe I need to swap out the two 512 drives in my gym PC for the single 1TB........

That makes sense. We'll see when I get to that point. :) I know the focus for cache drives seems to be having your docker instances on there along with their associated data for quicker access. I'm not even sure if the speed benefits of a cache apply in this use case.... you're not going to...

Work in progress DIY Networked Attached Storage

Currently topping out sub- 80c, but had been hitting 100c (and presumably throttling). Checked the board and found that the fan wasn't kicking in.... swapped the bios setting to manual and then back to automatic but increased the "PWM Start" to 100 from 80 and it seems to be working properly now...

Work in progress DIY Networked Attached Storage

Still planning on unraid. Looks to me like it'd be a lot easier to navigate than TrueNAS would be especially when it comes to docker "apps". The only thing I'm not completely sure on ATM would be if unraid will incorporate my 1TB NVMe as read/write cache for the array... most cache drive topics...

PCMark Extended https://www.3dmark.com/compare/pcm10exb/256770/pcm10exb/221865/pcm10exb/209254/pcm10exb/209085# Decent enough improvement over the N100, but also not an apples to apples comparison as this is on a SATA SSD while the Beelink was using NVMe. edit: Night Raid...

Work in progress DIY Networked Attached Storage

So far, so good under windows 11 (even to the point of it deciding to authenticate for some strange reason). Device manager is clear, and all network cards seem to have installed (including the 10G Marvel). The only thing I'm not completely sure on is that I'm not seeing any kind of audio other...

Work in progress DIY Networked Attached Storage

Used drives (plus a few extras) have also arrived. Not sure how I'm going to populate the array now.... the original intention was 3X10TB used + the new 22TB as parity and a 4'th 10TB as a spare. Maybe I'll do 3X10 + 2X8 + the large parity drive and keep the extra iron wolf as a spare. (pretty...

Work in progress DIY Networked Attached Storage

Motherboard has arrived. Made it through customs without being dinged for duty/taxes. No doubt that this isn't intended as a consumer retail product.... zero markings on the box, and zero documentation on the board. I thought perhaps the qr code was going to lead to a manual, but it's not...

    X870E chipsets are overheating

Yeah, your title is misleading/clickbaity........ This is not a chipset issue (other than the fact that it requires a fairly beefy heatsink and/or active cooling), this is a manufacturer's defect.

    Weirdness

It almost sounds like a windows scheduler issue, but I would have thought it would be big news if lots of folks were having issues. The only suggestions I could think of have already been tried. Bios updates, windows updates (including any possible optional ones).

SMR is the technology that's problematic for NAS setups. CMR is what you want.

Pretty sure ironwolfs are fine. Should definitely be CMR (or at least not SMR). Ironwolf and ironwolf pros are designated as NAS/Enterprise drives.

ever had a BIOS update take this long?

Definitely decades ago. Probably back in my early single core proc days.

ever had a BIOS update take this long?

I didn't realise biostar were still around. I don't think I've seen anything from them on this side of the pond for well over a decade.

Apparently this is a brand new drive (DM? ) with 16,20, & 24TB versions. https://www.seagate.com/content/dam/seagate/en/content-fragments/products/datasheets/barracuda-3-5-hdd/barracuda-3-5-hddDS2131-3-US2411-en_US.pdf Spec sheets specifies CMR, but specs (like hrs/year and TB/yr) reflect...

Work in progress DIY Networked Attached Storage

Node 304 arrived (relatively quickly from newegg I might add). Pleasantly surprised at the weight of the box, it may not be a premium quality case, but it's more substantial than a thin walled cheap case. Fit and finish seems fine. Frame is relatively thick with no obvious flex with the side...
