Old but New build - Home Server/NAS

I debated FreeNas (or well TrueNAS now), but ZFS requires more planning up front. I would have maybe gone for smaller drives but more of them. The benefit with unRAID is I can transfer the HDD in my main rig over to the server once I replace it with an SSD/nvme. Granted it does cost money vs...

Old but New build - Home Server/NAS

Today I learned what the x2/x4 on nVMe's refers to... x2 PCIe/x4PCIe 🤦‍♂️. Discovered this when I could only see two of my new hard drives instead of three. I knew using the M.2 slots would take away SATA ports, but I was thinking these are SSDs so they will only "occupy" one SATA port. I...

Old but New build - Home Server/NAS

The more I think about it, the more I lean towards unRAID. At the very least I'll take advantage of the 30 day trial. Any thoughts on pre-clearing/burn in of the drives before using them?

Old but New build - Home Server/NAS

Having recently upgraded my main system I have been debating what to do with my old one, particularly the case ( I appear to have misplaced one of the 5.25" cover plates though). At the same time it has been years that I have been thinking of setting up a home server for media consumption and...

First build in a while - opinions on what to reuse and suggestions for new parts

Well I was clearly a little rusty - first build in 6 years and probably first fully fresh build in nearly 15 years: first I removed the thumb screws from the side panels. On the 3rd one, after struggling on the 1sdt two it dawned on me these might be captive screws😅. I didn't read the...

First build in a while - opinions on what to reuse and suggestions for new parts

Well a year has passed (a very busy year) and unfortunately two days ago my trusty R9 390 kicked the bucket. Honestly I would have figured my nearly 11 year old Mushkin Joule 1000W PSU would have died first (is mushkin even still around?). While my dad has lent me a Radeon HD 6950, I decided to...

    Rants etc.....

Having been a while since I last built a system, I miss being able to order from out of province and save the QST (~10%).

First build in a while - opinions on what to reuse and suggestions for new parts

Found this article "Ryzen 5000 Memory Performance Guide" https://www.techspot.com/amp/article/2140-ryzen-5000-memory-performance/ which I found interesting since it not only used a 3090 but also a 2070 super. While the 3060 Ti marginally outperforms a 2080 super, I figure the 2070 super is...

First build in a while - opinions on what to reuse and suggestions for new parts

The be quiet Dark Rock is on my radar, I'll look into the Phanteks one. Thanks FreeKnight I remembered reading that there was a benefit to DR vs. SR for Ryzen but didn't think it was of much significance. But it does seem, depending on how CPU bound you are, that you can get 2 - 8% more...

First build in a while - opinions on what to reuse and suggestions for new parts

Based on the feedback you guys have provided and some further reading/watching on my end I'm looking at this so far: CPU - Ryzen 5 5600X GPU - RTX 3060 Ti (told the gf the friendly folks on the internet helped reduce the budget, she said now I have more to spend on her 😅 ) Memory - 2x8...

First build in a while - opinions on what to reuse and suggestions for new parts

I really appreciate all the suggestions and different perspectives. It has been so long since I built a rig that there are definitely things I haven't considered. If it wasn't for the fact I already had a custom loop I am not sure I would have even brought it up. Having watched a tonne of...

First build in a while - opinions on what to reuse and suggestions for new parts

Thanks for the feedback guys! Didn't realise the pics were no longer available. I attached a couple quick pics. Yeah, I searched around and some people suggested that the mounting bracket for the EK supremacy could maybe be modified. But couldn't actually find someone who did it. I am...

First build in a while - opinions on what to reuse and suggestions for new parts

All the excitement of recent hardware releases (despite lack of availability) and the fact my rig is starting to show it's age (25-30 fps in Cyberpunk, struggles in BL3 as well), got me itching to build a new rig. The Basics: Budget - 2250 CAD before taxes Location - Canada (Montreal area)...

PSU and MoBo suggestions for new build

That is true, but I figure I can safely get a couple more years out of this one before I replace. It's a risk I am willing to take.

PSU and MoBo suggestions for new build

So in the end I decided to keep my current PSU (Mushkin Joule 1000W) and bought: i5 6600K Gigabyte G1 Gaming R9 390 Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 5 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-2400

PSU and MoBo suggestions for new build

I'll probably end up grabbing an EVGA SuperNova G2 or one of the new Corsair RMx series either 650 or 750 depending on the price at the time. Just a matter of waiting for the right sale(s), I would like to see some better prices before MIR.

PSU and MoBo suggestions for new build

I was agreeing with you: that a 650 would probably be the right choice since I didn't plan on going crossfire. Re-reading what I wrote that was not clear.
