Look up the case spec. It'll tell you whether a 280mm radiator will fit.
Look up the spec of the motherboard. Then look at support. then compatible CPUs - to check if the CPU is compatible with the motherboard.
You should be well under 3000 quid. Try putting your build in PartPicker - to help...
Troubleshooting
Under the heading of "Troubleshooting Essentials" I'd include having an internal speaker and using the post/beep codes to home in on a non-POST problem.
I'd also check CPU temps.
And PSU Voltages.
If the PC POSTS then you usually have an OS problem. Try Safe Mode fixes...
What POST beep code you getting? Computer POST and beep codes - fit an internal mobo speaker to find out.
Check CPU socket with magnifying glass to find bent pins.
"I can literally pull out the nvidia card, slap in any other brand of card, and it boots just fine." - could be a dud card.

I'd wait till enough varieties are released and available, priced and have reviews so you can compare.
Same with any PC component or peripheral.
970 and 980 MSI was good. And Gigabyte. 980Ti Strix seemed to be best.
