    AMD launchs Radeon DDR3 memory

I'd think this is the kind of approach that would reinforce a "Radeon = White Box" association among the general public. Can't imagine why they'd want that. And usually "Gaming" branding involves flashy looks, which these are utterly devoid of. Very strange.

Lian Li V2000 “SpeLL7″ PC is Spellbinding

Nice looking build, but that's a 343, not a V2000. That had me staring really hard for a minute, trying to spot the seam where he joined two cases together.

    Want to Sell HDD Encl

Whoops, kind of forgot to update this thread. But the remaining Thermochill rad was sold a week or two ago, and the remaining pump is now occupied in another project of mine. So the HDD enclosures are available, but that's it.

    Motion lock on mobiles

I'd have nothing against this sort of thing being voluntarily implemented, or even used by businesses for their vehicles. But as a government law applied indiscriminantly? Absolutely not. That's a "Damn the civilians, bomb those enemies" type of attitude, used by people with chronic...

Intel Announces Third-Generation SSD: Intel Solid-State Drive 320 Series

Additionally, the pricing doesn't seem anything all that impressive either. Certainly nothing that we haven't been getting for the last half-year. And while it's nice that Intel's finally gotten their sequential writes up, and they DO seem to get a lot fewer complaints on the reliability...

Roggers Thottels WOW ( PCWorld )

Not the first time this sort of thing has happened. I play Vindictus, which uses a P2P system, and there have been a few times over the last half-year where we would have people from Ontario who had Rogers, suddenly unable to maintain their connections with any sort of consistancy.

    Pre-built gaming machines

On sites like this, with a high-percentage of DIYers, you often see people a little out of touch with how much there actually is to learn about building a system. It's one thing to simply learn where to plug the bits in, it's quite another to gain the experience at troubleshooting and tweaking...

Thermaltake Announces Immediate Availability of Level 10 GT

I could actually get behind this case. Still a tad pricey, but not obscenely-so like the original. I'd want to see more shots and impressions, though. Especially of the HDD area (looks stuffy for cooling, and hard to tell if there's any vibration isolation), how well the cable-routing actually...

    Thermocouple Probe Question

It's already been said, but just putting it between the CPU and heatsink is a no-no. Considering that you can see CPU temp improvements simply from increasing pressure on a fully seated heatsink, deliberately sticking something betewen the two that can't be measured in tens of micrometres...

    Programming, what to choose

True, but the the kid in the OP sounds like he's new to the whole "programming" thing, and VB is fairly quick and intuitive to learn when you don't have any preconceptions about programming, there are a million teach-yourself manuals for it, and it at least gives you a taste of what it's all...

Cutting the top heatpipe of an AC7PRO

The majority of heatpipes rely on a low-pressure environment inside the tubes to faciliate the phase-change process. You puncture them, you instantly ruin them, even if you seal them up again.

    Programming, what to choose

Depends on what direction you want to go. For the hardware/process control side of things, C is almost a no-brainer, especially considering that many controller-specific languages are heavily based on C syntax anyway. But for software development, languages like Java, Visual Basic, C++/# would...

MSI boards appreciation topic / No flamers!

I think MSI may have some sort of license as an actual brand name, but they're not the only ones using that technology, nor were they the first to use it. I think it may be a little like "Kleenex", where lots of other companies are also the in the tissue business. Never looked deeper into it...

MSI boards appreciation topic / No flamers!

You're not just counting marketing phases, are you? Because while things are getting better, I'd take one of their DrMos phases over any 2-3 of quite a few other manufacturer's phases. I'm not getting a new board until lga2011, but I may just take a look at MSI again. Got burned back in the...

    Anti aliasing and resolution?

It's game-dependant, and also depends on the type of AA being used. And it depends on how picky you are about your visuals, I suppose. From my past experience at lower resolution, going from 4x to 8x virtually always yields nice improvements, while 8x to 16x tends to vary. But even at 25x16, I...

    Fan filters

If you need good filtering, the Silverstone ones aren't bad, but best filters I've come across are the DEMC ones. Haven't seen them for sale in Canadian locations, but Performance PC's and FrozenCPU both stock a variety of sizes right now. Very fine mesh, and they have a magnetic adhesive ring...

    Dear CoolIT and Corsair

Ah, they did kit it. Was kind of wondering about that. $300 regular price is a little high though. Even if the MCP35X pump is probably responsible for a lot of that.

    Dear CoolIT and Corsair

The problem is that the current crop of all-in-one WC units are basically just a list of trade-offs where they give up degrees until the unit becomes cheap and fool-proof. The instant you start using a better pump, cost and mounting becomes more difficult, and noise from a hard-mounted pump goes...

    Rift MMO beta key Giveaway

Honestly, it still tends to boil down to hotkey cycling. There are a wide variety of builds you can do, and quite a few are viable, but the main questline is extremely solo-able, and the dungeons fall neatly into the traditional tank/heal/dps trinity. That said, definitely one the most refined...

CES 2011: MSI Demos New AM3+ Big Bang Conqueror & Lightning GPUs

Personally, I've kind of quit worrying about that issue. A good case these days will cycle air through fast enough to make it a minimal issue, and it allows for much better heatsink designs than the traditional leafblower style (even the quiet leafblowers). Any increase in case temps is...
