Thanks!
Nope.
Phase 2 kind of fell through when most retailers dropped the WD20EADS.
It seems to be back, but I'm afraid of a new batch.
I'll have to order a test unit to see if WDIDLE and WDTLER still work.
If it does, next stop 50TB!
Actually... it wasn't that bad price wise. Only about $5k.
You could build one twice the size (literally with 2TB drives) for about the same price. Damn hardware pricing dropping like stones.
I have A LOT of TV.

A BUNCH of space.
Why not? Name something better that's cheap.
Actually I'm kind of debating on revisiting GP drives since I stumbled upon...
Why don't I need 100TB?
Hell... I've been live a couple days and I'm already pushing 1/3 full. And I haven't even started looking for HDDs yet.
As for pics, all I have is a Picasa link above.
I do run a bunch of websites. But those use squat for data. It's more bandwidth.
And I don't watch...
I haven't done the $/GB math on a range of drives in a while, because frankly there's only a very small subset of drives that interest me. Basically all Seagates, WD GP, Samsung, and all "odd" sizes (750GB/1.5TB etc) are out.
So I'm literally left with Deathstar and WD Black/Blue.
Blacks are...
I store things. A LOT of things.
I've had large file servers damn near as long as I've had a computer. I'm ALWAYS running out of space.
Until now.
You've probably heard me pushing the SC846E1 + 9690SA-4I.
A few here have adopted it. It's tried tested and true.
Those crazy enough to need...
I have no idea what it costs to make a chip, nor how well it scales.
But Intel does sell 2x the CPUs that AMD does, so maybe quantity has an effect on raw chip cost?

It all depends on the scale of which you want to ensure you have backups.
Something as simple as copying all your stuff over periodically (automated or not) is better than nothing.
I hear (some) good things about Windows Home Server which (I hear) can automate backups to itself.
Stupid...
HDDs (in my experience) don't tend to go as often as cheap RAID solutions.
RAID1 will protect you all day long from a drive dying, but how about your controller deciding to blow it's brains out? What then?
Trust me. I've had it happen a few times.
And yes, != means does not equal
I know how you feel about fast internet.
My *ahem* seedbox that I use to download completely legitimate Linux ISOs is connected via Gigabit to the internet.
It's really satisfying to see a Linux ISO finish in under a minute.
How does that even relate?
If there was a policy that allowed software returns due to defects/bugs/etc we wouldn't have this problem.
It is?
Last time I checked I can buy software in store.
Way to twist my example horribly.
I said that by sampling a food item, I'd be inclined to buy...
