your subject line says it can support 28 drives, but the specs you listed don't jive with that. typo?
Thank you for catching that was not intentional. Edited the title. 26 by accident would have made more sense than 28 atleast I could claim just the first digit was wrong not sure where 28 came from.

I jist remembered one of my multi meters has a dB meter. It is still a 2U not a desktop with 140mm fans so my comments above were comparitive to other 2U servers I have been dealing with.

Pointed directly at the front of it at idle
1ft ~ 62dB
4ft ~ 52 dB

From behind same height point directly at it in the airflow
1ft ~ 69dB
4ft ~ 55dB

From the side
4ft ~ 56 - 60 dB it is bouncing around some

Measurements with it sitting on an ikea desk in the middle of my basement. On boot everything spins up to 100% like every other server didn't take measurement of that.

Bump added another NAS but with drives. Also found 4x 1.5TB drives I can add to the other NAS after a secure wipe. (When time permits)

hey Iz...what OS version are these NAS running?

and do you know what max HDD capacity is? I know I can look at the spec sheet, but deets can change as firmware updates and stuff are released.

my brother-in-law is looking for something. he had all their important documents on a HDD that was plugged into a USB dock and his wife didn't see it and tripped on and kicked it and the HDD is pooched / bricked, so he's looking for something more robust and cheep.

My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that 6.X doesn't actually have a drive size limit and the published 4x4TB limit for the DS412+ in a lot of marketing material is simply due to the available drive capacities at the time. Something they are not going to update after the fact.

I don't know what version is on the DS409, its down in the server rack right now while I purge the DS412+ and the server rack is currently disconnected while I make plans for it's new home (need to take out 2 small partial walls). When I'm done with the 412 I can bring it back to my desk and figure out the software versions.

Reduced the price on the 409 without the drives a bit since it appears to only support as new as 4.2.3179. I had to go hunting in web archives just to find the download.
