Finalized 4K setup, 4K TV with HDMI 2.0a, 4K GPU with HDMI 2.0b in 4GB MPC box with dual-core x64 CPU. So, got my hands on 4K content in HEVC/x265.
Awesome picture! Win10 Films & TV plays it awesome utilizing GPU.
Hurdle numero uno: ...but without sound. Same goes for Windows Media Player. The reason: Microsoft provides no codecs for DTS audio. DTS is 20 year old tech, still not supported by Microsoft.
Who needs Microsoft, right?
Fired up good old VLC. There is some sound coming out of speakers now! Yey!
Hurdle numero dos: Unfortunately VLC x64 CPU encoding is not sufficient to keep up with 4K framerate. GPU encoding is buggy, pixelates picture.
Who needs french software, right?
Downloaded CCCP/KLite with MPC-HC x64 enclosed. Audio is on! Open source beats Microsoft into pulp audio-wise!
Hurdle numero tres: Though MPC-HC x64 plays 4K with CPU encoding better than VLC x64, but it is still unwatchable. Feels like 16 frames per second is tops for CPU encoding. Switched on GPU encoding. Well, tried to switch it on. Confirmed, it is not turning on at all on Nvidia GPU (Pascal), AMD GPU (Polaris) or Intel (HD Graphics). So, open source software supports all GPUs except for Nvidia, AMD and Intel, I guess. Yeah, but there are no other GPUs out there. Sad.
Well, so it seems like you either watch 4K movie mute, or just listen to the soundtrack. Today I will write a script to start movie simultaneously in WMP (for video) and MPC-HC x64 (for audio).
