Makes me wonder if this is not also one of those little/big cpus.
that was my first thought too...but hesitated to say that. it could be that only some of the chips have HT active. in hindsight though, the big LITTLE makes more sense. time will tell.

I doubt it, they would be shouting it from the rooftops like they are for Alder Lake S.

Likely a die harvested yield thing, or maybe it allows it to hit the performance targets. Despite being 14nm they need to pull out all the stops to beat the 10900k

I read somewhere that they expect the chip to max at 8 cores, so this was a way of making a probable i7 different from an i9...again, lots of salt.

If I had to guess is that this is a newer design back ported to 14nm (was supposed to be 10) and there just isn't the die size for the new features and 10 cores. i.e. If they added AVX-512 that could eat up the extra space.
