triple-8 is a "lucky number" in China, like "777" is here. The 808.8 drive is a marketing gimmick aimed at this tidbit of info.

Yep, but a good way to get rid of drives that just barely failed 1TB demarkation...doubly funny when you hear that 888 can also be taken as a gossip queen :hahaaccording to my wife, just now told me).

Well I knew the answer already because I remember the release last month...was China only AFAIK...then had the thread open when she walked up...laughed at me...said "that's only lucky if you are a gossip queen!"
