I have been looking around trying to find what is the best folding GPU. So far it appears to be the 9800GX2. Is this stilll the case? Has the 295 GTX taken this crown away?

What would be a good price to pay for a 9800GX2 if one was able to find for sale (used)?

The 295 GTX is the new king, if you can afford it. The 295 will get ~4000 ppd more than a GX2 but costs alot more. For the money the GX2 is the better deal if you can find a used one at a decent price, especially for a dedicated Folding rig. No idea what they go for used but they can be hard to find cheap, lots of Folding addicts looking for them...

Once again, there are the issues with Vista and Folding on a GTX 295.

For price / performance per watt I am going to say go with the GTX 285 and OC the shaders.

The GTX 285 is what I would get, almost the same PPD as a GX2 without the dual-gpu and excess heat hassles. I just mentioned the GTX 295 because he asked for the Absolute Best GPU.

There is supposed to be a fix for the GTX 295/Vista 64x problem. From what I've read the GTX 295 sees the HDMI port as gpu 0 and the two dvi ports as gpu 1, if you put a hdmi to dvi adapter and a dummy plug/monitor on the hdmi port it solves the problem.

It works for Vista64. You don't need to see, you don't need to test. It just works, you'll need to find the driver that works for you though (for me it's 185.20).

Go out, buy that adapter, plug it in, put dummy on it, disable SLI, extend desktop --> two cards folding. It's really that easy.
Sorry, I meant to post this earlier and completely forgot, must be old age creeping in...

With all these GX2's being bought, I'm starting to get the feeling I'm going to get run over in the rush to the top of the PPD charts...:blarg:

So for folding 24/7 a used GX2 is better than 2x new 9800GTX+ ? What about heat and power usage? Just curious.
A used GX2 might be slightly cheaper than two 9800GTX+'s and only uses one PCI-E slot, on the other hand it the GTX+'s will generate more PPD and will run much cooler. Mine don't usually break 60* and are very quiet, the GX2 often hits 80* or higher and are loud. Power usage I'm not sure about but it must be close, the GTX+'s are 55nm the GX2 is not...

Ok so if I was able to get my hands on a 9800gx2 for $400 Can or under that would be a good deal?

How about a 8800GTX for $100Can? Would that be a wise purchase?

Would I be further ahead with a 8800 GTX @ $100.00 or a 9800 GTX @ $180.00?
