Glad I read this, as I was planning to buy it. I still have the original installed and play from time to time, so I was hoping that they built a new MP platform.

Well, it has a new multiplayer platform, in the sense that multiplayer is now synced with Steam, instead of being through MSN Zone. Pretty much the only improvement is the ability to join up on your steam friends' games.

Really, if you only want to play SP games, then the original is good enough.

The original + Forgotten Empires expansion/mod and you've saved yourself $20!

I'm glad people appreciate this game. I played Age of Empires I, II, II expansion, III a little bit but didn't like it, Age of Mythology: Titans was by far my favorite though. Even just playing around in the map creator for AoE was fun.

I bought another copy and installed it on the wife's lappy. She's not a gamer, but has expressed some interest in starting up. I figure this is a good enough game that her (slow-ass) laptop can run well enough. She spent a few hours yesterday playing the William Wallace tutorial, and maybe this evening we'll try out a PvP map.

If this allows me to play PC games with her, then it's money well spent!

Did anyone else have issues with (the lack of) sound? In my playthrough of the Wallace campaign a lot of the environmental and effects sounds weren't playing - for instance with 10 guys hacking at the watch tower it was only the music I heard playing.

Nah according to the reviews, it's a horrible update. The framerate suffers, sound doesn't work at all, they don't give out any options in the graphic settings. The game feels really dated in terms of controls and hotkeys.

However they said the framerate issue should be resolved in a patch soon.

Is it still a fun game? Yes. Is it worth $20? Probably not. Especially when you've already paid for the original. Oh well, price of being a gamer i suppose.
