Another point:
These under TV shelves would likely interfere with the best mounting point of the monitor arm.

This is why I'm looking for a "sandwich" solution, so that by simply using let screws I can still mount the monitor normally

it's likely going to be easier in the long run to try and mock something up in fusion or something similar. I had a quick thought and would probably do the vesa mount and tray as seperate parts then attach the 2 parts using some threaded rod so you can adjust the shelfs height to match the size of the monitor. Or something like that.

Or maybe some 2020 aluminum extrutions.

Definitely two pieces.
Thinking either L brackets or a locking tooth mechanism.

Time to start the 3D modeling class methinks. Early 2021 resolution: learn enough 3d modeling to print my own things. 👍
