Thunderbird is my go to recommendation for people who don't have an Office licence to use Outlook. It has been around a long time, and seems to be well supported still.

Is there a free version of Outlook that competes with it? I bought an Office Pro licence for 2016 version and use Outlook through that, but if I didn't want to give them my money again Thunderbird would be the email program of choice.

The "New" Outlook in MS Store is the eventual only option I believe. They've been trying to push people off the "old" Outlook as I presume it'll eventually be killed off. They are definitely not like-for-like feature wise though.

Im confused. Is this in reply to the question in the first post? 😂

I'm confused by your confusion..... my answer was "yes", to the question, "anybody here use Thunderbird as their email client?", in the thread title, and "don't know, since I haven't used Outlook in YEARS", to the question, "any reason you chose it over Outlook?", in the 1st post..... hope that cleared it up.

It was a joke because I thought you repeated the same thing twice. Hence the laughing emoji. But in hindsight I see that my comprehension of the text was the joke.
