So is this all the Skylake CPUs including the Xeons? A E3-1230 V5 is $200 cheaper than a 6700K yet still 4c/8t.

Not sure if it will work on Skylake Xeons as they are locked to the C series chipset, and not sure if this BCLK hack will be compatible with it. So far have not heard a peep, the focus is on Z170 and H170 at the moment.

This is the news that I was expecting, maybe I'll jump on a mobo with DDR3 and an i3. Must be micro ATX though. And I think is not a "hack" as per se, it is sanctioned by Intel, as Skylake was always supposed to be overclockable on the base clock as well not just multiplier.

Personally, I wouldn't want to eat those trade-offs for BCLK overclocking unless my system was seriously under-performing.

I'd never want to see anybody bork their CPU, but OTOH it's refreshing to see at least one form of OC'ing slipping back into the Dark Arts category with a hint of danger/risk.

Yeah, it's been mentioned as a footnote in several articles that V5 Xeons will only boot in C232 / C236 boards. That's partly what made me decide on the 6700K, though my other concern was the turbo on the top current Xeon. Maybe'll that will get tweaked in the refresh.

My personal speculation is that the Xeons were intentionally locked out of the consumer chipsets this time around BECAUSE of the additional value the BCLK overclocking could introduce, but also the fact they don't want people putting Xeon's into ECC enabled consumer boards with ECC ram and then breaking stuff with BCLK adjustments.

With K series chips inheriting a lot of the features that non-K chips used to have (vt-d, tsx), it would also completely invalidate those non-K chips as you could either go with a Xeon or -K series depending on your need. If it weren't for the volatility of the exchange rate/market in Canada, the 6600 would pose no advantage over the 6600K. It certainly doesn't in the US (Barring stock issues).

People were buying the V3 1230s over K chips because of the great value they had, that would only be furthered by BCLK OC.

Personally, I wouldn't want to eat those trade-offs for BCLK overclocking unless my system was seriously under-performing.

I agree here fully, but having that additional flexibility returned to us of topping off/slightly tweaking a multiplier based OC through a K chip isn't so bad. I don't personally have the patience for such things these days, but I can see it being of value to those still serious about squeezing out as much performance as possible.

I'm gonna try it. I've been waiting for this since I ended up getting an i7 6700 non-K. I could care less about C-States, power savings or AVX. I have r9 390s what do I care about power usage heheh?

Pedal to the metal.

You guys have gotten soft since the intro of idiot proof overclocking lol. 20+ years bclk was the way to do it. To date I can honestly say I only killed one chip and that was an mmx 233 back in the day. Being an enthusiast meant squeezing what you could with some risk involved(if you know what you are doing there isnt too much risk) and achieving top end performance for considerably less value. Not throwing as much money at it as possible and changing a few dials or making it flashy.
