Just ordered an i5 6500 to play with. I'm also building an i7 6700 for a customer, though it's on a Gigabyte board. Might pull the CPU out and put it in my test machine tonight just to see it with my own eyes.

Just wanted to mention that some very large motherboard vendors are not doing this quite yet due to potential liability over damaged processors. Some key processor features like power saving modes have to be completely disabled for this to be achieved.

Remind me not to buy a PC from you! :bleh: Unless of course that passes as the burn-in test?

Interesting, all I heard so far is that IGP needs to be disabled. Will be interesting to see which power saving modes get disabled in exchange for BCLK adjustments. If it's things like link power management for PCI-E/SATA then that's not so bad.

This is not an official ASUS BIOS, only enables base clock overclocking on non-K CPUs.
Don’t use this for K-series CPUs.
It might damage your hardware, no guarantees provided.

Issues found so far

* No IGPU
* No dynamic change of CPU frequency
* No C-states
* No Turbo Mode
* CPU temperature reading is incorrect
* AVX instructions have very low performance
* Windows XP ACPI not supported

After flashing set the following settings to make it boot into OS with correct CPU speed

Advanced\CPU Configuration
- Boot Performance Mode -> Turbo Performance

Advanced\CPU Configuration\CPU Power Management Configuration
- Intel(R) SpeedStep(tm) -> Disabled
- CPU C states -> Disabled

That's a pretty lengthy list of tradeoffs. I wonder if it will always be like this? I would miss AVX performance and temp readings in particular.

A commenter in this thread: Overclocking Non-K Intel Skylake CPUs (Performance Tests!) | Overclocking.Guide mentions that Non-K overclock could be the result of an Intel Management Engine hack.
That could explain the power saving options and temperature trade-offs. Maybe the CPU doesn't know how to handle the power states and doesn't know how to power up the AVX parts of the CPU without thinking it's pulling too much power?
