The stock ASUS firmware is actually pretty good, and based on Tomato source code. Merlin's firmware adds back some of the Tomato features ASUS removed, so it's a good compromise.

I wouldn't bother with DD-WRT at all personally, unless they've fixed QoS in the recent years.

I run Shibby's Tomato on my RT-N66U (used only as a router) and Merlin's on my RT-AC66U (used as an AP).

Definitely AC-66u, I love mine.
Feature packed, stable, covers moderately large house, and stable.
N66U is a cheaper and more reasonable go-to since the AC band isn't really standardized yet, while the N66u still keeps many of the great features of the ac66u.

Those are AC1900 routers, meaning 1.9GB Per Second data rate. Are there any commercially available devices, PCs or smartphones that can handle this rate????
