Another vote for an xbox controller...just make sure its an xbox series controller and not an older version (they didn't have bluetooth)

Easy to source, good feel, works well, well integrated by default with Windows and games...no drama

Grab yourself 4 rechargeable AA (ikea are IMO the best bang for buck) and you will never have a battery issue (just make sure to charge when you swap).

I've used a DS4, X-box, PS5 and Nintento Switch Pro wireless controller, and some knock-off switch controllers.

Depending on the game my DS4 is the one I always navigate to - I just like the positioning of the joysticks best for me especially playing Rocket League.

I don't like the off-set stick style of the x-box controllers or it's trigger buttons.

The PS5 controller felt too bulky in my hands like it was a stretch for my thumbs to go to the joysticks almost as if I had to loosen my grip and rotate in to reach it (And no I don't have small hands lol)

I will say that the Pro Switch controller was the same layout as the x-box but slightly smaller and grips on the palms in the handles where the vibrator motors are and it was quite comfortable and I like the triggers to.

But I've been having Bluetooth issues with my DS4 controller which happens if I go several months without using it so there's also that.

And I ALWAYS get them at Walmart because of the 2 Year warranty with free returns and a full refund that covers the cost of a new one (-) sales tax. I've returned 4-5 DS4 controllers and 3 switch controllers all with stick drift issues.

Xbox One controller, followed by 8bitDo or Switch pro controller.

Using a "+ style/nintendo style" D-pad is so much better than the crappy 360/XSX 'circle pad' or the lacking PS4 'broken cross'. Triggers are generally better on Xbox, though some prefer the PS4's twined analog sticks over the Xbox layout.

I've picked up two used series 1 Xbox elite controllers (though one is in rough shape). I prefer replaceable batteries and have a 4 bank of rechargeable batteries so I never need the gamepad to be plugged in to recharge like the PS4 or Elite series 2 controller.
