Blood work shows at my age over 60 I am prediabetic which I did find a little strange but my cholesterol is up higher than normal so I need to watch my diet, which isn't easy being lower income,the good foods are not cheap plus buying only Canadian makes it even a l;little more tricky so I need to find a site or 10 that actually shows calories and foods that are more realistic for me to afford, years back I took for granted my native GF and her families being able to get Fish especially all sorts of salmon plus some other seafood easily available for them and free . I love my potatoes but since evn potatoes soaked in water that is drained and refilled over a few days has high starch I cant eat very many of those plus I cannot seem top get a straight answer about Brown rice one site says not good other site says its good even my doc says not good and for me rice that I also soak over a few days doing the same as my potatoes is cheap but again can't get straight answer.
anyway I will stop complaining if anyone uses certain sites and you link them or something, I need to get my ass in gear about this.
 
My mom recently got the same diagnosis from her doctor and was told to visit a dietitian. Might be best if you can look into the same? Hopefully there are some that are free or low cost in your area.

Heh.... I had one of those consults with a dietitian, not verbatim but it went something along the lines of......


Stop eating all the stuff you like, fill yourself up with the stuff you can't stand. :)

She even went so far as to comment that her family didn't like yogourt either, but that after 12 years they were starting to get used to it. :)
 
There are lots of foods that are healthy and affordable. People will all have their own opinion on how healthy, and what’s best, but my personal opinion is to keep it simple and just aim for whole foods…don’t buy pre-made/overprocessed…buy food, not what may have been food before being processed and preserved.

Almost all root veg (carrots, potatoes, sweet potato, turnip, beets, parsnip, etc) are cheap and easy to find Canadian.

Beans and lentils are super cheap if you buy dry. They cook pretty quick and easy in something like an instant pot. Lots of fibre and protein to fill you up. No idea if they are grown in Canada.

Personally I wouldn’t fret eating rice if it is cooked from fresh/dry and not a high sodium/flavored packaged version.

Myfitnesspal for calories and macros. Their database is massive, so scanning almost any UPC code or entering any recipe will be found.

The best piece of advice I got for correcting food was NOT to think about what to cut out; but rather to work on ADDING the correct foods. If you work on adding all the good things, there's simply less room for the bad stuff. And you aren't left dwelling on all the things you suddenly can't have.

That is pretty much how I have always eaten and still those were my blood test results except for sweet potatoes for some reason it does a number on my stomach, probably the only food I was given from my Es Native GF that I had issues eating of course i am speaking of Sweet potato and not yams which a few people get mixed up with hehe
 
My wife and I use Cronometer, just the free version. Lots of features. Works well for calories, macros, creating your own recipes and foods, scanning bar codes on foods, etc. and you can sync it with fitness activity apps if you want to.
