can PWM fans be used without PWM controllers?

hey all,

can i use PWM fans without connecting the PWM and RPM signals to a mobo or controller? all i'd use are the ground and power wires. would that work? i was poking on the AC web site and i don't see any mention of being able to leave the PWM wire disconnected.
