this is the result after a national security review was completed. you can still use the app and make content for it, but Canada has told TT to shutter all operations in Canada, so their BC and ON offices are closing. whether you use them or not as a social media resource is a personal decision but ask you think about your use now that your government has declared them a risk.

I don't really know, looks more political than anything to do with security. If it was a security concern, it would have been blocked/deleted from the app stores.

It seems like a poor time to basically say "if you have foreign ownership, we can shut your business down anytime we feel". Along with all the people that do work there, whom I imagine are Canadians, that will now be jobless.

Half measures seem the best kind of measures according to our current administration so a ban that's mostly optics is on brand.

I don't imagine TikTok employed many Canadians tbh. The company claims a nebulous 'hundreds' but I assume they're counting 'creators' in there, most of whom will continue crossposting to FB, Insta or X (shudder). If we were really concerned about Chinese influence on security they'd be making substantive changes in real estate, immigration, and blacklisting Chinese companies with long histories of IP theft.

When I was working at Handy dart when patrolling walking through the building I would see the younger women 20yrs of age area, when there was downtime for them their faces glued to tiktok scrolling away mindlessly totally oblivious to their surroundings , I think it should be banned just because how it makes people into mindless drones it reminds me of watchign children when durring the old cartoon days and a commercial would come on with some toy and the little ones were hypnotised by the commercial screaming I want that toy or I want McDonald's uit to me is like watching the 20-30 second TV commercials only now people just blindly believe what they see and forgetting that its entertainment hehe

Sorry no. Tiktok has major security concerns via the Chinese gov. This isn't political. If they wanted to shutter businesses that actually hurt Canadians they'd be shutting down Chinese owned oil sites etc.
