Yep, much better bundle pricing than Rogers was when we moved a couple of years ago. My monthly bill went up $80+ for similar services switching from Eastlink to Rogers.

I still don't quite understand the cable internet they provide. How can someone pay for 50 mbit/s and get only 2 upload? I mean I've used Comcast internet at my friend's house (in the US). 250GB cap, 20 down, 8 up.

Ever saturated your bandwidth using a p2p protocol?

Giving to much upload to someone will kill the download and the network in general. You need to find a nice balance somewhere and really do you need more than 2mb upload.

I have 1Mbps up and I really don't mind. I can't say I find myself uploading all that much.

No. In a capitalistic competitive market, other ISP would have a competitive field and thus lowering cost and adding better quality service. The CRTC is governed by a group of socialites that are in turn, controlled by Rogers and Bell - this is protectionism.

Canadians pay the highest cell phone and internet rates in the entire world.

The CRTC has to go.
Well capitalism doesn't always work when there is no competition and the only competition is a duopoly.

So in this case capitalism is working against the people when there is no competition. It wouldn't matter if the CRTC was here or not. We need laws to be changed to let more companies in and force bell and rogers to be competitive. If I was in full power of the country I would but the heads of both Bell and Rogers in prison and then teabaged for the rest of their lives.

When will Canadians stand up and fight?

Obviously one of the big disadvantages to Cell / internet providers in Canada is the low population density. A single tower or fiber optic line will cover fewer people than it would in other countries. Mind you, this isn't such an issue in the bigger cities, but Canada has a large percentage of rural dwelling residents and the costs are shared by all. Also bear in mind, that some cell providers only cover Tiny parts of Canada.

For myself, I am just glad that Wireless internet is starting to become available in rural areas even if it is expensive. When I lived on a farm 10 years ago, all we got was 28k, then I lived in towns and Cities with highspeed, but now I am moving to a small village and my only real option is CCI Wireless (3 Mbps $90 / month, unlimited usage) 10 years ago this wasn't even a possibility.

Funnily enough the population density is one of my favorite things about Canada :)

Well here in Winnipeg, there are basically 2 options for internet - Shaw and MTS. Shaw is also the only other home phone provider other than MTS and they both have TV service as well. I'd say the competition between those two is pretty intense. You also have the option of satellite for TV as well. To the East, as well as the West, there are more companies like Telus, Bell, Rogers, Eastlink, Tekksavvy, Videotron, and more so I don't think there is really a lack of competition. The thing is our country is so huge, and our population is so small that the cost to build their infrastructure compared to how much customer they have in one area to make money off of is alot worse than say somewhere in Korea or China where there are tons of people living in a centralized area so they can afford to have low rates. Same thing goes for cell phones, there are plenty of carriers out there and more are coming. What ISP's need to stop doing is being such douches with their bandwidth caps. Maybe cap upstream bandwidth or something and raise up DOWNLOAD (downstream!) caps to prevent p2p? Maybe sell base high speed internet packages with even lower download caps then they are now (depending how LOW your current cap is) and then sell extra bandwidth to the people who need it for a REASONABLE price? Something like $10/100GB, $20/200GB? <<< Although not likely to happen because most people do not come close to their bandwidth cap anyways already.

CRTC is definitely a problem though. It is kind of sickening to know it has ex chairmen of different companies in the industry. If they were supposed to be helping out the Canadian public they should be setting limits as to how much ISP's can charge us for bandwidth instead of creating laws saying that they can charge us for extra bandwidth.

Wow I just looked at my Internet usage ( shaw) it it has been huge for the last couple of months this month in the last 20days I have used up 165.6GB and this is just from download uploading my TV shows and some Linux software plus Linux OSs and online gaming. the months before averaged over 200GB, I had know Idea I was using this much.
I went to my usual internet site ( DSL reports) and was reading a couple of posts there and I have to say that some people are just plain stupid. The is this one person that has the same shaw plan as me which allows 100GB month well this person shows a screen shot of three months up to Jan 16th , For some reason I can't post the screen shot so I will just post the link

Slide show | DSLReports.com, ISP Information

Now that is total abuse and this is when I think that they have to have enforcement because it is very obvious this person is up to something.
Online gaming must use allot of bandwidth because I have noticed that mine went up allot since I started getting lost in the online gaming world again. how does one figure out the amount of bandwidth they are using with online games?
