So you didn't have to send anything back to them? This was a "take some pictures of the problem and we'll ship you a new part" transaction?

Company Name: Cruial

Date purchased: Last year
Date RMAed: last month
Where it was sent to: Idaho, US
Ease of RMA: 10
Any extra fees?: Hell yeah.
Wait time: ~ two weeks
Details: I bought the drive late last year (before prices fell), but it sat on my desk for months. Upon installation, I discovered it was DOA. But I was well beyond Amazon's return period. Filled out the info on Crucial's website, receiving an RMA authorisation was quick and easy. But it had to be shipped at my expense to Idaho, US. A week or so after I received a new drive, UPS sent a letter demanding $41.53 for bond fees and taxes. I guess someone at Crucial never ticked a box indicating that the shipment was a warrenty issue, or UPS is trying to shake me down.

Satisfaction: This is a hard one, but 0.

I had this same issue a few years ago, with a video card I RMA'd to XFX. While discussing the RMA with them, via email, I specifically asked them to make sure that when they sent the replacement card, they mark on the invoice/packaging that the item was a warranty return. They said they would, but, of course, the shipper overlooked/forgot that, and IIRC, it was FedEx that sent me a bill for brokerage fees. I contacted XFX about it, and THEY contacted FedEx on my behalf, because THEY were the ones that shipped the item, and they straightened it out with FedEx, i.e. nothing else was required from me. Tried that... Crucial told me (politely) to go fuck myself. They claimed that Crucial does not have "any control" over brokerage fees and that "all replacement orders are marked as a free warranty replacement when they ship". If true, UPS is straight up scamming. What a shock, eh? I think I'll just ignore UPS' invoice.

1. Email UPS and tell him you will clear the package yourself.
Email: csgfred@ups.com

2. Get the paper work from UPS to clear the package yourself.

3. Get the Invoice from Crucial that you can present as this a warranty replacement and value would be $0

4. Lookup CBSA near you and self-clear the package. Pay for the service, like $10 and send over the paper work back to UPS so they can release the package.

NOTE: Do NOT ship using UPS Ground. Brokers will charge you $15 to pick up a pen and god forbid they actually have to fill out more than one checkbox, then they are on a roll...

Should we assume, based on these two posts, that you long ago tossed the paperwork and/or packaging that the drive came in, and you no longer have proof, and don't recall whether or not it actually was "marked as a free warranty replacement"?

As for Crucial not having "any control"..... sure, that's true, except that if they sent it via a higher level of service, brokerage is included, but, of course, they want to keep their costs to a minimum, so they shipped via the lowest service level. If Crucial did, in fact, clearly mark the package as a "free warranty replacement", then yes, the issue is either that UPS simply ignored that, OR their policy is to collect brokerage fees IN SPITE OF the item being free to you..... that info may be on their web site.
