changed my mind and want to go with a mid-tower...but I'd still appreciate recommendations.

I looked up the 220T and specs say it's 18" tall, which is solid mid-tower territory. I'm not sure I'd call that short though.

I meant short front to back. That said.... it is tight for a full ATX motherboard. Getting the bottom edge cables installed was a bit of a pain.

A plan change already…

Dedicated dust filters are getting more rare, and will cut many cases on its own. And if you want scratch resistant clear side panel it has to be tempered glass and not acrylic.

How about the big brother to my case, Fractal Meshify 2 Compact? There are dark and light tint tempered glass options to your preference.

the Phanteks XT Pro Ultra that's got my attention has a tempered glass window with magnetic top / bottom dust filters. it is looking better and better to me!

that is a nice case...but keeping my window / RGB theme in mind, the XT Pro Ultra looks good too. but what in the world, Phantek...removable top and bottom dust filter but no front panel dust filter? I'mma slap you for that!
Oh haha, misread it and thought you didn't want any RGB. Then yes, the Ultra would make sense and I think the front panel itself would probably collect some dust since the holes look pretty small/fine.

originally, I didn't want RGB...but then thinking about the grandkids and how much they'd like that I realize that as long as the LED's can be disabled / turned off, it's okay.

does anyone have experience with be quiet! Silent Base 800 / 802?

I love the Meshify. Great choice.
For ease of RGB, I'd highly recommend a Gigabyte Aorus MB. Their 'Fusion' RGB software is very simple to adjust on the fly. And it isn't as aggressive as the Asus garbage.

Another option for something different in cases... The Jonsbo TK-3. I have the TK-1 and I can't say enough good things about it. It isn't tool-less, but it has almost everything else you're looking for.

the parts come with an MSI Z790 Edge WiFi, so getting a new mobo isn't in the cards.

Let's see... I'm late to the party so I'll throw a few ideas on the wall and see what sticks:
- Corsair iCue 4000D: seems to check many of the boxes. Glass panels, integrated filters(? Gotta double check), 140mm fans, great RGB (the iCue software has gotten better over the years), and ridiculous cooling potential. Maybe too big? Bit expensive ($200 ish)
- Fractal Design Focus 2: Smaller ATX case, cheaper build though. Filters are intake grilles. Okay cooling, but fewer options. Get what you pay for though, around 110-120?

Personal favorite (for you) so far:
- BeQuiet! Pure Base 500DX (currently on sale @ Newegg!). This one really ticks ALL the boxes! Tempered glass. Unique design. RGB. Solid cooling options (slightly less flexible than the corsair, but plenty). It's a BeQuiet, so it'll be quiet and comes with a couple of their fantastic fans. REAL removable filters! It's an interesting pick from a great brand, and isn't as flashy (if that's what you like) as regular cases that just show all the fans up front and center behind glass or a grill. Everyone has systems like that, so the different approach of this one is fresh and sleek, IMO. Plus, you don't need to buy RGB fans for the front panel so you can get more performance/ quieter / cheaper fans! There's obviously still a side window though, but a couple of top RGB fans or a (less-common nowadays) simple RGB strip tucked in behind an edge would light up the interior nicely.

Pretty late, but let us know which bits/features you like or don't like and we can keep going from there.

Edit: OH! Mustn't forget one of my favorite brands: Coolermaster! If you're going aircooling, the HAF 500 remains a beautiful monster. Giant RGB intake fans are flashy, unique-er than 120s/140s, and cooler better and quieter than smaller fans. The HAF 500 even has a little "spot cool" -esque fan, to aim some airflow directly at your GPU.... but it's kinda on the big side haha. It's not a super tower, but definitely a chunky case. 🤷‍♂️

@Marzipan I think this one checks most of the boxes that you mentioned: Montech Sky Two GX

It's $103 at NewEgg, with free shipping in Canada..... got one for my bro-in-law's new build, and it's a pretty nice case(am still thinkin' I might get one myself)..... glass door, that's easily removable, enough drive spots, PSU covered, dust filters, pre-installed 140mm RGB fans, velcro cable management tie-downs, etc., etc. (y)

Just to get a feel for it, maybe check out this video: KitGuru - Montech Sky Two GX Only misleading thing in that video, is that the vertical GPU mount DOES NOT come included, i.e. it's an option.
