I put about 1/2 hour into it this afternoon. Runs fine on my hardware.

I agree with the general review consensus that the UI isn't very inspiring. Then there's the issue of constant crashes.... first it was as soon as you attempted to launch a new game which crashed to desktop with a fixaris crash report box opening, most recent was the crash report box opening but at least it continued on with launching the game instance.

Early impressions.... they've given barbarian outposts their own city names now?

I guess I'll be playing it at launch after all. I mentioned to Mrs GBA that I was interested in buying the game, but I usually wait a bit, and she went ahead and got it for me anyway.

Strongly considering using up a vacation day on Tuesday.

That was a game mode in one of Civ VI's expansion packs - Barbarian clans. You can trade/purchase units with them in the early stages of their development, and if you don't wipe them out, they eventually turn into city states.

So, I've gotten a couple of games under my belt, and while I'm still coming to grips with how the game works and the best way to play it, I have one massive positive impression:

When you're in an age, that age lasts a good long while, and you get to fight with the units within. For Example, if I"m playing as Rome, I want to play with the specialized unit, the Legion. In Civ VII, you're playing with Legions and Ballista right up until the end of the age. In Civ VI, you'd research Legion, then by the time you built a few units, declared war, and actually mobilized your units, Longswordsmen would be within reach, and Musketry wouldn't be too far behind.

I still need to figure out how to utilize commanders (or the specialized Roman Legatus). They're a mystery to me so far.

So.... WTF. I played a game to completion. Met the military victory condition in the Modern Age. And then the game just... ended. No more 'one more turn'. WTF?
