Cptn. Vortex used to buy and resell systems on X99 boards. I forget the exact reason they were still so popular though...and he hasn't mentioned doing one in quite a while, so guess whatever benefit they had isn't so beneficial anymore. but still...he did it frequently!
I believe it was a combination of a few things - quad channel memory(also, I THINK they could use ECC RAM), the ability to drop in a variety of Xeon CPUs, some of which would enable, IIRC, up to 40 PCI-E lanes, opening up the possibility to use multiple GPUs, plus those Xeons having more cores than the usual quad core/HT that were the typical config for so long..... there may be more I'm not thinking of.....
