Hello Guys,

10 years ago i setup for the first and only time in my life a raid 5 configuration. Since then, i never have to touch it until this week.
One of my hdd is dead.

Questions:

Are hdd are hot swap able on the raid card or need to shutdown the system to make the replacement ?

Do the rebuild of the raid will be automatic after changing the dead hdd?

Which card?

Should be no issue with hotswapping the drive and it should auto-rebuild once the new one is installed. At least on any card I have used you have to explicitly disable auto-rebuild. Do you have software to manage it from an OS vs the cards BIOS ? This lets you monitor it and worst case initiate it.

Rebuilding an array is extremely read/write intensive and may take several days depending on the drive size and controller. This is often when other drives like to die. I would confirm your backups are in good order ASAP.

To play it safe, I'd power-down the system and replace the drive. This allows you to check connections and ensure it is not a faulty connection.

Sound advice on validating your backups just in case, the rebuild takes hours (possibly days) and this puts an immense stress on HDDs.

If I may ask, how many drives do you have in your array, how is the power connected and what is the PSU?

Do NOT use SATA break-out adapters on more then 3 drives TOTAL.

Yeah, 10 years. We move in our new house in august 2011 and i build that server around my birth time in october. So, 10 years and 2 months.

Raid is on a lsi 9260-i (with bbu) 6 hdd of 3tb paired to a corsair 850W. Connected via SAS to sata cables.

At first, i've done the setup of the raid by the bios but since then i'm running their software.

Also, all data is already on 2 news 12tb drives. They have 3 or 4 months of use.

Edit: For the end, i'm currently buying new hardware to build a new server in replacement of this one.

There is a strong chance for array failure here. Rebuilding the array is disk intensive. Doing a rebuild on such old drives can easily cause one of the other drives to also fail.
