As you probably know, but also a heads up for sswilson, these do run a bit hotter then other SFP+ (aka fiber ones) so if you ever need to remove one when the device it has been in for a while, there is a slight risk of it being VERY hot to the touch.

so he probably wants to use some greezers or twippers to pull out?

They don't actually seem all that bad, but I suspect grabbing them during/immediately following a large file transfer might be a different story.

node 304 naked.jpg

Node 304 arrived (relatively quickly from newegg I might add).

Pleasantly surprised at the weight of the box, it may not be a premium quality case, but it's more substantial than a thin walled cheap case.

Fit and finish seems fine. Frame is relatively thick with no obvious flex with the side off, and the main cover metal is more than thick enough.

1'st complaint.... the PSU extender cable's plug is oriented the wrong way for my PSU to be facing with the fan downwards. I can force it in, but it's not ideal IMO.

They do make adapters for this, but I shouldn't have to purchase a third party adapter just to connect my PSU.

OTOH, I'm glad to see the fan "controller" incorporated into the case. Lot's of questions about being able to regulate the system fan header so this removes that concern all together.

Yeah these XZSNET ones are a newer chipset from what I could gather so they run around 55C for me at least (in my fanless aggregation switch too). It's still warm on the fingers surely, but my previous Mikrotik ran upwards of 70C, so those stung a bit.

Wow, that's a lot cooler then I was expecting. Hell I seatcisco ones still run at that 70C.

Whenever I need a new one at home I'll definitely keep them in mind.

Motherboard has arrived. Made it through customs without being dinged for duty/taxes. No doubt that this isn't intended as a consumer retail product.... zero markings on the box, and zero documentation on the board. I thought perhaps the qr code was going to lead to a manual, but it's not leading anywhere (I'll have to disable my ad blocker on the off chance that it's blocking the link).

Still waiting on the 32GB stick (it's in Canada at least) so I'm going to throw an 8GB stick onto it and install windows just to test the board out.

Used drives (plus a few extras) have also arrived. Not sure how I'm going to populate the array now.... the original intention was 3X10TB used + the new 22TB as parity and a 4'th 10TB as a spare. Maybe I'll do 3X10 + 2X8 + the large parity drive and keep the extra iron wolf as a spare.

(pretty sure that's a crappy enough picture that there are no serial numbers to be garnered from it........ :) ).

I have lots of 3TB and smaller drives about but I really need to make a jump to larger drives like those.

So far, so good under windows 11 (even to the point of it deciding to authenticate for some strange reason). Device manager is clear, and all network cards seem to have installed (including the 10G Marvel).

The only thing I'm not completely sure on is that I'm not seeing any kind of audio other than the video? Pretty sure there's supposed to be a minimal realtec chip on this. Not a big deal though.

Currently installing pcmark to give it a run-through for comparison to n100/n95.
