I missed the release on this. Is anybody here playing it? Most importantly... I see it's being marketed as a "Multiplayer Epic Space Adventure"... does that mean there is no single player option to avoid the trolls and griefers?

edit: Slowly digging through the press and it looks like there is supposed to be a single player only option but that they cancelled plans to have an offline single player mode.

edit2: https://elitedangerous.com/

edit3: Looks a hell of a lot like the original Elite, even to the point of seemingly mind numbing empty space.

I've got a feeling I might end up pulling the trigger on this shortly. :)

Get the docking computer hehe.

Heh... well I'll be finding out. Pulled the pin, gonna cost me quite a bit though.... $60 USD at CC conversion rates... :(

The vid I posted sold me. Looks wayyyyyy too much like the original with better GFX for me to resist.

I can see this is going to be quite a time sink.... this is probably one of the few games I'm interested in learning a multitude of keyboard shortcuts for. Currently doing the first tutorial (lining up and shooting cargo pods that don't shoot back) and I can see it's going to be a pretty steep learning curve. :)

Starting out with a controller which I'm assuming will give me the best control over both 3D movements and a second stick for view.

Xbox 360 controller works great once setup right, or any controller with dual joysticks.

What I've heard about it is that low on content, gets repetitive quickly but has amazing sound design. A lot of my fears that I had with the kickstarter sadly came true, there is no point in making a game with countless systems, you are never going to see another player ever, and you can't even begin to populate it to a decent degree even with procedural tech. I was thinking of getting it but with what I've heard and the fact that there is no offline I'll wait till it goes on sale or I find a cheap copy of it somewhere. I'm having enough fun in Star Citizen's Arena commander to keep me occupied currently. Hopefully after a few updates it will improve, but the general consensus is that it was pushed out the door too early.

I'm still mucking about in the sims (and probably will be for at least another 10 hours) so I can't comment on the gameplay content, but I wonder if any of the folks complaining about lack of content played the original game.

I alluded to "the mind numbing emptiness of space" above and that really was one of the main signatures of the original Elite. This wasn't a Star Wars space combat game where you quick traveled from one battle to another, it was primarily a space trading game with the occasional pirate thrown in (a lot more in systems under Anarchy ). Spending 10 minutes traveling from the jump point to the station isn't a design flaw, it's integral to the game, as is just pointing the nose of your spacecraft towards the outer regions of whatever system you're in and heading out there to see what's there.

As far as never seeing another player goes... that's fine with me, I'll be playing solo anywise.

Maybe there isn't a place for games like that these days, but I for one wasted a good portion of 2 - 3 years gameplay on the original and am looking forward to doing something similar on this version.

Fair enough, one of my concerns for star citizen is that there won't be any empty space but my concern with ED is that stuff to do at the end of the void isn't engaging enough and that there isn't enough variety in those things. I definitely think theres a market for these types of games still, Star Citizen has surpassed the funding of most triple A titles in crowdfunding alone

I have heard some good things about it, that docking can be challenging and fun and that the sound design is stunning but I would be interesting in hearing what you think of it as you play
