yeah
Odyssey expansion is live.

I haven't bought yet. It isn't quite what I was hoping for based on the YT vids I've watched. Still likely to buy it as it does add significantly to the game. I am disappointed with what I saw for some aspects of the FPS combat and of course that you can't walk around inside your ships like you can in Star Citizen.
Yeah the performance is real, while on foot my frame rate serious dips down low and while i am not running a current gen graphics card, it is higher than the recommended specs.

Seems to sit somewhere between 15-35 fps at 4k and a little higher at 1440p.

The fact that Horizon and Odyssey players can't play together until Odyssey also launches on consoles made people really think that this was turning out to be more of an Odyssey beta launch using the PC platform for more testing.

Maybe that is in the video linked above. I have not watched it yet.

pretty much.

But as some one who has played elite for several years, this is just how big content updates to the game go. It was this way with fleet carriers and horizons. It's frustrating for sure, but it's not the end of the world. It took them several patches to get fleet carriers stable, on it's launch most people couldn't even buy one without crashing out.

there are some tweaks that can be made to make it at least playable such as turning lower the resolution, reducing the super sampling and maybe turning down the detail a notch.

There other more egregious errors they made like the entirely horrible outfitting screen and i really really loathe the new gal map.

I suspect the launch was more of the dev's saying "it's not ready" and the suits saying "we don't care launch it". And here we are picking up the pieces for this beta launch. :)

Certainly not a unique story these days if true. I had thought that Frontier might be a bit more insulated from that thinking? They aren't under a big publishing house are they? Especially with Braben still being involved and Elite being his baby. Maybe I've interpreted that wrong.

Although I was excited for the first "steps" into the Elite galaxy, I've paused this one for now. Every other update I purchased at launch. But the more I watched about this one the more I felt it needed to mature before I bought it.

not that i am aware of, they just leverage other game stores such as steam and epic but they also self publish, but the fact that they generally launch new cosmetics that can only be purchased with arx which can either be earned at a slow rate or purchased leads me to believe this was more of a financial/keep the stock holders happy decision than a development/technical decision.
