External sound card(s) with at least 24/96 optical out?

I'm going to sit on this for a day or two to see if anybody else has suggestions, but as it stands I'm probably going to order one of the Topping D10s units. Saves me a significant amount of money over one of the creative labs models, and I don't need a full fledged sound card, I just need a decent optical out port that can be moved from one build to another so that I'm not forced into a relatively high end board just for the sake of that port.

Well... since there were no further recommendations, and the amazon listing was showing "only one left" I grabbed it. :)

Hopefully this will do the trick. (Thanks for the recommendation Friendly)

Got it in this afternoon, and most certainly working as advertised WRT me just wanting to output a decent stereo optical signal. Wish I'd have looked into this years ago for this particular application (strictly outputing to a receiver for stereo music audio).

Of course.... now that I've got it, I can't leave it at that.... I'll have to test the analog out against the digital signal. :)

It'd also be interesting to look into one of the smaller power amps (as opposed to a receiver) assuming I could get one working with my sub. (But then again.... that's probably a whole new rabbit hole I probably shouldn't go down.... :) ).

Grabbed a Fosi Audio BT30D Bluetooth 5.0 Stereo Audio Receiver Amplifier 2.1 Channel to try pairing with the DAC.

I couldn't resist.... looks like a perfect match and it was on sale. :)

Wow!!!! Just Wow!!!!

No problems driving my Polks, and sounds great.

If you're not concerned with surround sound one of these will turn pretty much any reasonably efficient set of speakers into a stand-alone set of powered speakers.

Bit of a thread res, but the recent posting of a motherboard bundle which did not have optical out had me looking into options just for optical out.

Douk Audio U2 XMOS XU208 Digital Interface, USB to TOSLINK Coaxial/Optical Audio Adapter

Currently on sale for $42 but normally priced @ $52 which is better than half of what the topping D10S goes for these days if all a person was looking for was an optical out to go to a receiver. (I ordered one to replace the cheezy 96Khz one I've got on my media mini-pc).

edit: The key difference between this and the topping is that this has no RCA out at all, this is strictly optical and coax out.

Are you going down the new build path to put this in?

I don't think so. It's tempting at those sale prices (especially since I've been considering upgrading to a 5950X), but I really don't need an upgrade. :)

I'll use this device to replace the crappy one I've got on my media PC, but even if I went the upgrade path I'm not currently using optical out from my main PC anyways.

Appears to be working as advertised. Certainly a niche product, but if you're looking for optical/coax digital out for a mATX/ITX motherboard and/or your laptop this could be the way to go. Also claims to be R-Pie compatible, but I don't know anything about the required driver support (device comes with a usb driver stick).

edit: Really have to stress though that this is strictly a digital-out device. It's not an external sound card that you could plug a set of speakers into. (My cheezy Startech has a dual option socket which works as both analog speaker jack and an optical jack.)
