Fake CPUs are comparably fairly easy to fake, at least on the outside. This is a 4090 heatsink, on a 3090 PCB, but wirh added GDDR6x memory modules (unlabed) and a lapped (wet sanded) 3090 gpu die, with fake 4090 markings added after. Pretty involved scam.
This is why I'd highly recommend to Not buy top-end hardware used or from Amazon. Buy them in-person and in-store (I'd recommend CanadaComputers, given the state of the world) whenever possible. Much less likely to be a fake GPU or CPU, and stores like CC should help you out if such a scam is discovered.
