Want to Buy FOUND - looking for cheep PC parts to build a system faster than a Core 2 Duo E6300

my friend has received all the donated parts. I bought him a Peerless Assassin 120 SE, which leaves him with finding a PSU and probably a case. he will get the PSU first because it might work in the case he has if the side panel is left off so the HSF fits. the other worry is whether the GPU will hit the HDD cage, as this is an old style Antec from the late 2000's.

just want to see what's out there. a buddy and I have reconnected, and I found out his desktop is an ancient beast with a Core 2 Duo E6300 and 4GB of RAM. he's sacrificed everything for his family and never really cared for any of his interests, so I want to surprise him with something...keeping in mind a $300 MiniPC running a lowly N97 absolutely smashes what he's running now.

okay... @anabioz is AWESOME and has donated an i7-8700K, Z370 Motherboard and a 16GB stick of RAM to my cause. this leaves the following parts to be found:
HSF - because of shipping costs, it probably better to just buy one off Amazon, but if you have something extra, I'm listening.
SSD - @anabioz is tossing a 512GB SSD too. I think HWC will need to make an 'awesome member' badge for them!
GPU - his old GPU is a Radeon HD 7700, which is a bit better than the UHD 630 the 8700K comes with, but it's from 13 years ago, so I'm not sure Win 11 will even have drivers to support it.
Case - case is not usable...it's an Antec from before 2010, so likely will have tofind something inexpensive off Amazon.
PSU - definitely need a new PSU

now, I'm not fishing for donations, rather looking for stuff that I can afford...donations won't be refused if they're suitable though and I'm more than happy to show my gratitude by covering the freight charges.

my friend lives in Watrous*, SK, S0K 4T0, which is about an hour n a half south-eat of Saskatoon, so remote. if stuff goes by CP, they have a PO Box, but if it goes by courier, I'll give their civic address.

*Watrous is where the original Twister movie was filmed and the combine you saw swirling around is a tourist attraction they have set up there.

SSD - SATA or NVMe; I have an old 480GB Intel 730 SATA I will likely send unless a nice NVMe option pops up.
GPU - his old GPU is a Radeon HD 7700, which is a bit better than the UHD 630 the 8700K comes with, but it's from 13 years ago, so I'm not sure Win 11 will even have drivers to support it.
Case - need to see what he has, it might be re-usable
PSU - definitely need a new PSU

Agree, @anabioz is amazing to help out, and I am glad you have a very solid foundation for this. Sadly I don’t have anything to specifically help out with as all my useful bits are now in my nephew’s pc.

For the cooler you are most likely going to be best off getting a 120mm Thermalright air cooler…$23-27 has lots of options…assassin X se with 4heatpipes, assassin x v2 (not se) is 4 with a smooth base, assasin king with 5, etc. I believe they all support socket 1151

EDIT: hopefully the case is decent, or you can get one used/cheap locally. definitely wouldn’t want to pay to ship one.

@Marzipan maybe you should clarify a wee bit, i.e. given that you've mentioned your buddy's postal code, and potentially giving out his civic address, was it your intention to pay for various items, and then have the seller ship them directly to your buddy's place, leaving it to him to assemble the parts?

yes, I'm hoping to have the parts shipped to him as he knows how to assemble a PC. he might be rusty, but all the parts essentially still plug in the same way. the only big change is the processor, with the socket having the pins rather than the CPU.

also, Watrous only has one postal code for the entire town, so being able to figure out who they are and what their exact address or PO Box is, would be quite something. ;)

Here's a question: Does he actually do any gaming? Will he game if he gets a capable enough machine? Or does he just needs a machine that's capable of running windows and performing basic tasks?

The reason I ask, is I have two graphics cards - an RX570 (I think!) and a GTX1080. Obviously the GTX1080 will be a better performer in games, but if he's not planning on gaming, then the RX570 would be perfectly adequate. Depending on what powersupply he's getting could determine which card he could use, too.
