Free Android VPN all belong to 1 Chinese company

Personally, the only VPN's I would consider recommending are Mullvad or Proton. (Mullvad is no good for region shifting for streamers, but Proton is.) Trust is a hard thing these days, but these two are well respected in the security space. I don't know much about Nord, but I'm leary of anything advertised that agressively because of the following...

Stay WAY clear of ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and PIA. There's lots of bad ones, but these ones are the biggest that I'm aware of that are part of the many that are subsidiaries of Kape. And if you aren't familiar, their story is worth looking in to. The TLDR is that they used to produce ad-injection and malware, amongst other slimy products. They decided the VPN space was more profitable and started buying up VPN's and advertising them like crazy. They are almost solely responsible for the current marketing boom for VPN's in social media. And it's the worst kept secret in the industry that they are VERY happy to sell your data to the highest bidder, regardless of their advertised policies to the contrary. They even own several of the review companies that rate VPN's, as well as the 'independant' auditors that approve their 'no log' policy.

A bit more concise summary on the Kape Technologies thing, ironic that it's on Windscribe. Guess I'll be switching when my PIA subscription is done.

is Nord not recommended anymore?
I still have NordVPN. It has been good for what I use it for, but I really only use it if I have to connect to less secure Wi-Fi sites when travelling. I don't use it for any location blocking stuff or whatever, and then I still limit what I do in those cases.

They claim to be no-log:

If all you're looking for is a VPN to secure traffic when on public WiFi, then it's a far better solution to host your own. Snag a decent Unifi gateway, set up OpenVPN, configure DNS, configure some security settings and EZ-PZ you're done. You can get a UniFi Express for the price of a 2 or 3 year VPN subscription, but then you OWN it. Not only that, but you've likely taken a big step to a much better network infrastructure compared to most consumer products.

I'll add that to the to-do list lol
I do have to at some point improve my network set up for home so this could be part of it.

The ubiquti vpn to get home was really nice to get setup for getting to home base, but I need something for making some calls out so some of the mentions here are appreciated.

I'm on PIA mostly just fir sailing the high seas, but i second Mulavad (i think thats how you spell it. They are probably one if the most privacy centered ones from what i had read ages ago, you could literally pay by sending cash in the mail to avoid paper trails back to you, and they ran everything on ramdrives and rebooted servers every day if i remembered correctly :)

yeah not really shocking at this point most of those free vpn apps are data harvesters in disguise if it’s free you’re the product always better to use something open source or pay a few bucks for a legit service rather than trust random apps with all your traffic
