More of a PR wank thing, its not so much that AMD will support the "old" G-Sync its more that Nvidia will support VRR on its "special boards" in new monitors. Kinda like how newer cards support VRR on "G-Sync compatible monitors". They are just bolting this on and will eventually remove the old stuff altogether im sure once the quest to rebrand VRR (and FreeSync) as G-Sync on every monitor is complete (Adored has a nice video on this)
