Today, it’s been announced that The Game Awards has shattered all its previous viewership records with 103 million total viewers across YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Steam, Facebook, TikTok Live and Instagram Live.

My guess is that the Hollywood market & television once coupled with the Internet and streaming just became supersaturated with programming, shows, movies, etc. Then Covid hit and magnified gaming a lot along with social media. I was quite amazed at how many games & game producers on the Game Awards that I've never heard of before.

As one Hollywood star (Anthony Mackie) pointed out, the super-hero has replaced the draw of the actors/stars. Along with a much younger social media savy audience. People go to see Spiderman or Batman not the dozens of actors playing those roles. Very few of the actors can draw audiences by name alone, like Tom Cruise.
