GN video about tariffs

I know Steve asked them all about the "move production to America" aspect but I feel that wasn't the best answered. It seemed like these companies saw no way to being able to manufacture in America. I suppose what was missing was a MAGA-supporting business to get that contrasting viewpoint. All the people interviewed seemed to have the same sort of general consensus.
yeah. the vendors are just moving their production facilities to other countries with cheap labor, not to the US where wages for specialists and experts needed are wAAAy higher.

It's going to depend on the industry and the scarcity of items. The auto industry in North America is quite fine tuned for production, so that any disruption is a problem. i.e. Stelantis shut down a Windsor auto plant for 2 weeks just with the threat of tariffs.

*snip*
The Stellantis example is a bit of a bad one. They're using the excuse of tariffs, but in reality they've been looking at shutting down both plants and entire brands for some time because their financials are so dire;
(older article, but their situation hasn't significantly improved). Their stock has dropped 65% in the last year and their looking to shutter certain brands (aka soon Chrysler will be in history books only, Jeep may not fare much better).

Not disputing most of your points, but Stellantis was doomed regardless of tariffs. Likely they used the tariffs as an excuse more than actually needed to shut down. Turns out no one wants to pay Japanese/German luxury prices for shitty Grand Cherokees...

Well I mean maybe now they'll see an increase in customers right? Surely everyone will flock to buying an American vehicle?

Only that it looks like it's Tesla, Honda and VW at the top of the list... https://www.cars.com/articles/2024-...ndex-which-cars-are-the-most-american-484903/ :ROFLMAO:

Fuck no, American vehicles are junk, I will never own another one. They used to eat paycheques. Mild untreated steel that rusts superfast. Nope.
Hate to break it to you but Japanese brands aren't doing so hot since the mid 2000.
  • Toyota Taco rusty frame recall
  • Toyota new Taco / LandCruiser / 4Runner V6 recall due to machining errors
  • Toyota GR Corolla catching on fire while on the highway and Toyota declining the warranty claim
  • Toyota / Subaru BRZ FA20 engine with excess RTV in the oil pan causing bits to block the oil return tube leading to engine failure
  • Toyota / Subaru BRZ FA20 engine have odd oil pressure drop issue in sustain turns during track days, then Toyota / Subaru declining the claim because track use isn't cover despite marketing their car as a casual track toy
  • Nissan Jetco CVT
  • Honda / Acura steering recall (this is new for 2025 with 13 crashes reported which 11 of those involve complete lost of steering control)
GM and Ford were doing better back around 2010 but some how slip up again. It looks like all the emission regulation is just pushing ICE too far.

As for the tariff, I don't think companies will even plan on doing anything because of how flip-floppy the US administration is. Like Rossman said in the video, businesses need consistency because their supply chain is planned out months ahead. Also, Taiwan is looking to block the latest node from leaving Taiwan so US will never get the best unless Taiwan somehow get more stuff out of US in the form of military hardware but given how slow F-16V were delivered to Taiwan, I really don't know how it will play out.

I agree with you on the rust problem for sure,it makes me laugh that I have a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe and it's has been oil with Krown at at least 8 times since I have owned it and it's almost like a brand new vehicle underneath.

I have hated American cars longer before 2012 as well and it just amaze's me that Hyundai figure shit out like with their Pony years ago, they rusted out fast and had problems with the wiring but other then that my friend said his were great, again it just amaze's me the Hyundai and other offshore car company's decided to improve the quality of their products and company's GM since the early 1980's did the very opposite and to this day probably can't figure out why they almost went bankrupt and to be bailed out.

Another reason I don't like American car's and GM the most is they took bail out from Canada and then closed a few plants a few years later on,but then again with stupid Canadian Politician's they would never have the for sight to tell them they have to keep all their plants in Canada going for so many years or else they'd have to pay back 4 or 8 times the amount that was given to them.

Lol I have a 2010 Santa Fe and it has been a dream to own lol. No AWD, no sport package, FWD only and it is a thing of beauty when it comes to the yearly maintenance bill. Last time I looked under it was 2 years ago when the rear subframe was about to be dropped to do the shocks and links.. it was nearly mint underneath. Tell that to my old Montana's... I had 2 because I thought the first one was just a dud.. hahaha...

Just hit 275K..
