GSX1000 firmware update killed it...

So I'm dealing with an extremely frustrating issue with my Sennheiser GSX 1000.

Up until recently, I've been using my GSX 1000 as a DAC because I like it's virtual 7.1 for gaming, but also because it has a very convenient audio output switch built in to it. Basically, my audio output all fed through the GSX, then one line went out for headphones, and the other fed off to a Fosi Audio amp that I have bookshelf speakers connected to. The whole setup worked incredibly well... until now.

All of a sudden my sound just stopped working altogether. No audio output for both the speakers and the mic. Also, I noticed that the windows volume control was disconnected from the GSX. (They used to work in sync) So I thought at first it was something simple like a Windows source issue, but quickly ruled that out. Then I did all the standard driver updates and checking for any conflicts, but couldn't find any issues. Uninstalled nVidia broadcast and even disabled all other sound sources to no avail.

This is where things get really bizarre... The GSX is driverless, but I figured maybe there's a firmware update that would help. I grabbed the Sennheiser updater tool from EPOS and sure enough, there was an update. Once completed, everything became much worse. Now, somehow, windows displays the GSX as two completely unique audio output options. One is for the headphones, the other for the speakers.

This appears to have completely disabled the ability to switch sources with the GSX. The 'headset' output now works no matter what is plugged in to it, but I can't get audio of any kind out of the 'speaker' output. This holds true if I swap to it with either Windows settings or the button on the GSX itself. No combination of anything I do will get audio working from the speaker output.

Bizarrely though, if the 'headset' option is selected, the Windows volume control syncs with the GSX. (Even though no sound actually comes out) But when I'm on the 'speaker' output, the windows volume control is completely independent of the GSX. This makes using it even as purely a headset DAC a lesson in frustration.

I don't know if the GSX has simply died on me, or if there's something going on I'm missing, or if this firmware update has simply pooched it regardless. But needless to say I'm incredibly frustrated and not sure if I should just be looking for another option.

Ugh... Well I just plugged the GSX in to a laptop and tested it and it's having the same issues. Two audio sources, 'speaker' audio option is borked, sync issues with Windows volume, and I also just noticed that switching between 2.0 and 7.1 audio profiles appears to be doing nothing at all any more. :(

Anyone know a decent DAC option with convenient output switching that I can purchase to replace the GSX? I don't want one with a front plugin for headphones. I want one I can leave everything plugged in and just hit a button or switch to go between outputs. I also need the outputs (including headphones) to be all out the back. I hate having a headphone cable draped over my desk all the time.

Mine's always had both speaker and headphone options. I've always kept it on speaker as headphone is limited to 2.0.

Bizarre. Mine is one of the original models and this is the first time I've ever updated firmware, so maybe it was on OG firmware thing?

The plot thickens. Out of pure stubbornness, I was moving it around testing it and found that another USB port on the laptop actually got it working fine. Not sure why? So I moved it back to my desktop, but plugged in to the front USB. Works perfectly. Moved it back to the rear USB and it's behaving completely messed up again.

What

The

Fork...???

I guess my next step is to start testing all the USB ports on the PC to determine if there's a problematic port. But that doesn't explain why one USB on my laptop works and one doesn't? Or why this all started with a firmware update?

Try another USB on the back. Some are CPU and others are another controller on most boards.

JDS labs has some nice options.

I can't really help with this issue, and unfortunately, I've forgotten which laptop (my wife's or my sister's), and which other piece of external hardware was involved, BUT I have run into the very same issue with laptop USB ports...... I recall a port on one side of the laptop not working with whatever piece of common hardware (an external HDD, MAYBE?) it was, so just for shits 'n' giggles, I plugged it into a USB port on the other side of the laptop, and it worked just as expected..... seems like maybe somewhat commonplace.

I'm running thin on rear USB, but I've been running it off the front USB for a while now with no issue. There's still some very odd behavior changes since the firmware update, but for the most part things are now working fine. I'm going to test the rear USB port when I get a chance and determine if I'm just dealing with a bad port. I'm not sure how that would show up suddenly after a firmware update, but worth testing.

Try killing all instances of it in Device Manager? That should force a reset the next time you plug it in.
