I just tried to cash in on my R9 290x on Ebay this week. It did sell for $380. I got slightly less than I should have for shipping as well. Ebay takes 10% of the total, including 10% of the shipping and other fees as well. Paypay steals another 3-5%, I can't remember exactly. Paypal is also holding my funds until after the buyer gets the card. As long as the buyer does not complain I get the money 2-3 days after confirmed delivery.

In the end I will get somewhere around $320. But it was a helluva lot of BS to do it. I was not in an immediate need for the money (I knew Paypal was going to put hold on it) so I chose this over selling locally. Ebay is just about too much hassle for the money anymore. They take way too much in fees.

Exactly, that's what I meant by don't forget the PayPal fees.

Depending on the listing type, eBay takes 10% off everything, PayPal then takes their 2% plus whatever tacked on fees they want so you're up to 3-5%, then they hit you with a foreign currency conversion if you listed in USD for another 2% and their conversion is always pretty gougy so add another 0.5%.

Last time I used eBay I ended up paying 18% in fees.

Thanks for sharing your experience, this is excellent information and all the reasons not to go eBay way.
Thanks again man for sharing your recent experience.

Yes, my experience moving a few dozen cards a few years ago, I found local the best way to go. Moved a bunch through Kijiji, Craigslist, RFD, and even a few here.

Shipped everywhere from Vancouver to St. Johns too haha.

I'd advise finding whatever your selling point is, then listing at least $50 higher. People like to haggle.

I took the Ebay route because no one around here was going to pay $300 for a R9 290x and Kijiji is useless as Lindsay is 50KM away from everything, no one comes here.

I will post my numbers here: I got $412.01CAD shipped for it. Ebay took $49.39CAD (43.71fees + $5.68 tax) and Paypal took $15.54CAD. Shipping was $33.75CAD. That leaves me with $313.33CAD. I never list in US, always lose that wa.

As I said, I knew about all this and I was not surprised by any of it. Now that they also charge final value fees on shipping charges it makes it even harder to make money. As for chargebacks, that also doesn't happen very much as Paypal actually has started to protect sellers more lately.
