I keep seeing ads for these and between the number of micro-b cables I had failed I just about bought a whole pile of these in different formats. I really like the idea but I have yet to bite the bullet since I'd want to convert just about every mobile device all at once.

well...if you run a USB-C laptop dock, this is exactly what you should test functionality with as this one is rated (claimed) to have no performance impact vs. direct plug.

yes! we get so many Lenovo laptops with borked USB-C ports becasue people yank them out rather than disconnect / pull the right way. and fixing that is EXPENSIVE, if it's fixable at all.
