ok so I have always rocked with Seagate just because I have had good luck with them over the years but I want to hear differences that may matter that I may not know about and what others would do for an archive server using drivepool+snapraid or Unraid.

choices being the Seagate Ironwolf's or the WD Red's (Both are CMR) thoughts and maybe things you would do.

now this last one is an SMR drive but it's sold as a NAS drive not sure if I would even consider it. only wondering about it since I have been using SMR drives for the last year or so but my archive server is used in WORM setup.

Seagate Exos or WD Gold. Cant go wrong with either. I'm not informed enough on the consumer drives.

WD, Seagate are obnoxious to deal with and questionable for reliability. I stopped buying their garbage 7 years ago and even in corporate seen their stuff fail much sooner than the competitors.

Even at a 20% discount it is still worth not getting Seagate

Then what is your suggestion? Aren't both Toshiba and IBM drive businesses owned by WD now? As for Exos or WD Gold, can you get them from shucked drives? (I think only consumer white labels for anything lower than 10TB?)

So Solace you but nothing but Toshiba drive ??? I guess Which I didn't know where owned by WD till the post above

How many drives are you planning on buying?
I think I will be buying 6 to 10 drives to start but I will be upping that overtime 4TB our my sweet spot, I must point out I have been using consumer drives in an archive style for well over 10 years without any problems besides a drive a two giving up the ghost over the years, hence why I listed the drives I did cause I am not sure if I should try the WD or just go with the Ironwolfs because I have used Seagate for so many years, this is all just for my data Hoarding ways lol and I always keep a full mirror of the drives. I have had more WD failures over the years

Right now I have 5 Seagate SMR drives in a drive pool+snapraid setup and I have a backup for every one of the drives in my "storage BOX" yes a case that holds HDD's not a pc lol in case anyone of them dies. I don't really need to have all this data it's just a hobby being a data hoarder so I like to do it on the cheap which also keeps the wife and the bank account happy

thanks for everyone's opinions I do value them

Yes I knew WD bought out Toshiba a while back, I used their drives prior to the buyout.

Now regarding SMR, I also came across this:

VERY interesting read.

WD ALSO bought HGST, which are considered the BEST drives on the market. I can only vouch for Ultrastars though.

I will however fully echo @crazyea 's comment, WD Gold or Seagate EXOs - enterprise class, comes with reliability and warranty.

Oh I got it wrong. Toshiba brought production assets from Hitachi when WD picked up Hitachi. So Toshiba could be using some form of HGST IP but they are probably up to the date when WD picked up Hitachi.
