It would be a great pfsense machine, however you'd be forced to use a usb NIC for OPT1 which isn't ideal. Overkill? Maybe a bit, but I use a Dell r210ii running esxi for pfsense so I'm a bit biased

With the extra M.2 and an adapter and a bit of modifications you may be able to squeeze a low profile card at the top. Say SFP+ or another port at least.

I am not sure too powerful is a bad thing as long as the idle power consumption isn't bad. You can consolidate all the security stuff and run all the services you want.

$20/tb. SMR Technology, so fairly slow writes (40mb/s I'm told). Great backup drive for the $ though.

Great timing too, as I just filled up my old 2TB critical data NAS backup. :)

I shucked a few 8TB externals while they were on sale for $99. Slow drive but similar idea for raw storage great way to go.
