Not a PC 'hot' deal, but fyi for any fellow Albertans.

Atco is running a new customer promotion for fixed rate power and gas. Power is down to 8.88¢/kWh and gas down to $3.88/GJ. Atco's daily admin charge is about 7c a day more than Encor, but unless you have really low use it should be a decent bit cheaper (the best rate I ever got with Encor was 9.890¢/kWh and $4.790/GJ.

As usual with Alberta you're not locked in at a fixed rate and can change anytime, etc etc. I've started checking every month or two and changing plans as better options appear.
I've been paying less than that for a couple years w/ GetEnergy. Been @ 8.4c/kWh. I believe DirectEnergy is even lower right now, under 8c.

For gas I'm on Variable Market Price + $0.70/GJ Transaction Fee. I don't think I've seen it above about $3.50/GJ in over a year.

Although both of these are mostly meaningless as Atco as a distributor charges 2-3x more than the rest of Alberta. Add another 13.61c/kWh + a $47 fee. Not including the city fees/taxes. For gas they aren't as bad, only an additional 2.288/GJ + $28/month fixed fee.

Oddly I don't see anything like those prices on Get Energy for electricity, lowest I'm coming across is 9.77c/GJ for 1 year fixed.

Direct energy is coming up as 10.49 fixed, but maybe it's a difference between Edmonton & area and GP?

Hmm. I was going just by the guy trying to sell me DirectEnergy @ Wal-Mart a couple days ago. Not sure why their website is so much higher.

I locked in at 7.77 kw/h, for 5 years just before interest (and everything else) started shooting up in price, back in '22.
Thats also the 100% green rate. I think at the time I locked in it was 6.8ish? Encor is currently offering 9.79c.

Gas is $1.801 GJ currently, floating.

I locked in at 6.8 kw/h for 5 years in 2019 and I'm terrified of the eventual jump. I've been keeping an eye on rates hoping to jump on a decent 5 year deal again if there's a dip.

You'll be fine. 90% of our bill is set rate riders anyways.

I saw almost no billing changes going from 5.4 to 7.77.

Good to know. I'm originally from Vancouver and the next time we adjust rates will be the first time since being here. I heard all the horror stories of people getting jumped to $1000/month bills during the rate hikes and I'm concerned.

My assumption would be that it's a salesman and they're lying, but that would never happen....
A Direct Energy person not telling the truth never...

---

I wouldn't care if Direct Energy had the lowest prices out of every retailer in Alberta I would never give them my business ever again. 2 weeks without power after buying this house and even had everything pre-planned and arranged weeks in advance and a power disconnect was still issued. Took 2 weeks to get it turned back on, and each time calling DE was over 1h wait times to talk to someone let alone the extra time to be elevated through the support chain to someone that could actually help. Thankfully I had control of the move in dates etc.
