How big is your NAS?

My main requirement for the media software is a firestick compatible client app which won't require side loading. (I really don't want to get into playing whack-a-mole after every firestick os upgrade).

I imagine Plex has one as I know for certain Emby (which is what I am using on my Firestick, on 2 of the inlaw's Firestick, and the FireStick I was using at the hospital when I was there 2 years ago). I looked up and Jellyfin also has one.

So, if I'm reading this right..... unraid is probably the NAS software I want to use if I want to incorporate docker instances for things like plex/kodi/jellyfin, or am I better off just doing those on a second N100 mini-pc?
Unraid or TrueNAS Scale (Scale has docker support)

Docker really runs on anything. But if you don't have experience with shares via Linux. Unraid would be a good choice. Shares and file permissions can be very annoying.

I think we might have had this discussion (or something along the same lines) when it came to me rolling my own opnsense router.... :)

Yes, Ideally something with a reasonably easily understood gui as well as step by step community guides would be preferable. I doubt I'd ever go beyond the basic 6 drive limit on the first tier, and from my understanding the annual OS update sub would only come into play if they released some new must-have features at a later date.

My only concern at the moment is that unraid can only be booted from a usb, but from the sounds of it that's just the basic boot and then it'll use installed storage so I could conceivably still have things like the docker instances running off of a small NVMe over and above the USB?

I don't think the USB is used much beyond booting. The OS runs in memory I believe, and only writes some config files and the license to the USB. Everything else should be running off whatever disks you attach.

Well.... the dirty deed is done to get this started.... Just grabbed the N305 version of that motherboard I posted earlier. $306.68 and I suppose we'll see if it gets dinged with duty or if it's a small enough package that they'll just pass it regardless of the +$100 value. (My keyboards got dinged, but they were heavy and hard to miss.... :) ).

Do we think unraid would be OK with only 8GB if I wanted to run docker instances (I already have an 8GB stick on hand) or should I grab a 16GB stick?

In general NAS type software really can benefit from ram for caching and such. I'd start with 16GB. And That is not taking into account a tonne of docker images and such.

Ah well.... in for a penny, in for a pound (or in this case another $100).

Grabbed a 32GB stick just to be sure.

I'm basically building a mini-PC here but using my own PSU and case.
