I was given an older IdeaPad 320 to use for work and it has a low res 15.6" HD display. however, I know it can run FHD resolution because when I connected my FHD 24" display via HDMI as a mirror and set it as FHD, the laptop adopted FHD resolution as well. I then set it to be an extended display and then the laptop reverted back to HD. just tested by mirroring and the laptop has gone back to showing FHD resolution. now I want to keep it that way!

Headless HDMI adapter is the first thing that comes to mind if it doesn't otherwise allow you to set it manually.

I was thinking you were trying to do it after removing the monitor I missed the point that you were just swapping between mirrored and extended.

hahah...that's what I thought, but like I said, wondered if I was having a brain fart, LoL!

but yeah, it's the strangest thing...set it to mirror and it will let me set it's HD display to FHD, but as soon as I change it to extended, bam, back to HD. :p

Googling the laptop's spec and reviews they all mock it for being a 720p display on a 15in screen. I "suspect" that while you were mirroring it was not actually displaying as 1080p but either downscaling or doing weird interlacing things which is why you can't force it while extending instead.
