In most cases, whether you're dealing with the store (eg. NCIX) or the manufacturer directly, it's generally the same:

1) Obtain a RMA number for your product.

2) Ship it back to the store/manufacturer for repair or replacement.

3) They'll ship the new or repaired product back to you after they receive the defective one.

There's exceptions to this, if you purchased a service such as NCIX's ExpressRMA service, you can often have an item cross-shipped.

What are you trying to RMA, and how long have you had it?

Most retailers offer a certain time period of RMA where you can deal directly with them, but once that time period expires you would need to contact the manufacturer.

Can you get a total refund and not re-order?
Generally these are the most common 2 options:
1) If the product is found to be faulty the product is replaced with the same or equivalent model.
2) If you want a refund there is a 10%-15% restocking fee as the product has to be resold as "open-box" instead of "new".

You might have other options depending on the brand and circumstances but from my (very limited) experience the 2 options above are what I expect.
