How Exactly do I add memory?

you may have had a windows update, whenever I have installed ram my PC just booted right up.
on a different note
one thing that always bothers me is the amount of ram windows now uses when pretty much at idle, I remember which was between 100-1000mg depending on everything running, my trimmed down WinXP used 150MB and I had a few things running in the background now it can be between 3-8Gb at idle mine right now with two web browsers with several pages open, discord ap running is around 8GB while I am typing this out
