how often do you reset your smartphone?

Back in my android days it was every year or so typically...not because I wanted to, but I would have a random issue. On apple, a full reset when I sell/gift it.

I noticed issues after it upgraded to 15, but not enough to bother with a wipe
I can attest to this. Back when a pixel was my daily driver after it went through a few major os updates I suspected something wasn't quite the same about it. And after a wipe it always behaved better. Then I found this www.flash.android.com, an official supported way to flash whatever os version you want. The phone always ran great after installing the os that way. This was before google pulled their battery "update" BS with the pixel4a.

Now that I've (grudgingly) adapted to iphone, you can do a similar thing with itunes and perform major updates that way. It optimizes free space on the phone too which is a nice bonus. I haven't done an iphone wipe in probably a year, but since I won't be going to ios26 anytime soon it's possible I might restore my saved backup sometime in the next 12-18 months.

iOS 26 actually runs amazingly well on my iPhone 12 Pro Max (or Max Pro).

I was thinking that even though my older device was stated as being supported, the performance would get hit with the new fancy graphical effects. But nope. It all runs very well. Have to hand it to Apple for optimizing it well enough to be available on a five year old, and even older I read, phone.

@gingerbee no, it has nothing to do with the hundreds of apps I have installed, I swear it!
I was about to say, lol. But yes, I rarely have to reset my phone. Normally, I don't have to do it and run my phones for 1-3 years, it all depends on what phone I buy. I do want to point out that my phones don't slow down over time, so just maybe it's all the apps being installed or uninstalled.

that flash.android.com URL no workie. :(

I mean.. I don't have to.. but I typically run their beta OS so it can be a good thing to do sometimes.. I ran iOS 26 right from beta 1 lol.. it was a good run. I usually go back to whatever is being signed at the time.

Sorry.. just replying to the shocked responses :)

do you have a rule / routine for wiping / resetting your phone?

curious to know what you all do.

What I do: if it's a new phone, I'll skip most of the setup (I won't restore apps etc) and I'll just do all the system updates. After all the updates are complete and there are none left, I'll do a factory reset, then I'll do my setup.

Then, after any major OS updates (I have a Pixel so I get the newest Android versions) I'll often do one, or I'll wait until after the first monthly update after a major OS update so that any minor bugs are taken care of.

With my Pixel 10 Pro XL I'm waiting for the December QPR update and then I'll reset over my Christmas holidays. After that, I might do one in June just prior to summer.

The setup isn't too bad for me; I use an app called Autosync to automatically download any offline files and folders I want (I have about 60GB in documentaries, 10GB in music, etc) so that is all offline. I use Smart launcher now (RIP Nova) and I use Google and SMS Backup pro for my texts, etc. I'm usually up and running within a few hours after a reset and for the most part all my settings and stuff are good to go.
