If I were to design a motherboard…

LGA 2011 w/ mATX form factor
Standardized, snap-in, foolproof, unobtrusive CPU fan/block mounting solution!!:blarg:
Power/Reset/CLR – and make it look like it was part of the design, not an afterthought.
2 well placed PCIe 16x slots
4 memory slots
8 backwards compatible USB 3.0 connectors
4 backwards compatible SATA connectors that don’t limit the size of video card I want to use.
Temperature sensors on anything that gets warm – heck, add temp indicator LEDs to each LOW PROFILE heat-sink… while you’re at it, connect the sinks with large, flattened pipes and add water cooling ports.
I’d also make it look classy – black PCB, polished copper sinks and black anodized aluminum – nothing left un-finished.
An onboard Molex/fan connector that STAYS ON after shut down – that would open up a number of design options.
Flux capacitor – v. 2.0, the one that uses compost – it’s a bear market when it comes to plutonium these days.
I’d fugetabout…

Analogue audio jacks
PS2 connectors, Firewire or Lightpeak
Expansion slots
Automatic ‘overclock’ buttons… useless.
Sculls, heat sinks that look like the back-side of Rambo’s knife, military references, women with swords and spandex, the word ‘extreme’ or the prefex ‘i’

Curious to know what you’re board would look like...

mATX compatible with every processor from intel and amd
7 pcie 16x 2.0 slots
4x cpu socket
24x ddr3 ram sockets, 6 per cpu
4 front usb 3.0 backwards compatible
4 back also ^
support for 7.1 audio
good mounting for fans, watercooling
high quality material
up to approx 3000 MHz memory speed or even higher and max 8x24 gb
maybe more but idk for now XD

More curious to see the price tag yours would get:shok:
They'd prolly need to start making bigger tags to fit all the needed digits.
fair enough... flux capacitors are notorious for messing with clock cycles anyways. I SUPPOSE I can cut that from the wish-list.

All the stated ones above me looked like it came from some fantasy. 7 PCIE and still a mATX?

Standard socket design that is compatible with Intel or AMD processors
Dual socket motherboard with standardized mounting holes for major heatsink compatibility
Slanted/angled RAM slots like you would see in laptops. Triple channel awsmness
All connectivity via USB 3.0 with minimum of 6 USB 3.0
Integrated Creative X-Fi Fatality 7.1 audio,Killer network card, wireless card and bluetooth capabilities
90 degree angled 24 pin power at the edge of the motherboard
90 degree angled 4/8 pin power at the very top edge of the motherboard
Every front I/O connector on the side of the SATA ports instead of at the bottom of the motherboard
Enough PCIE for a 4 way SLi/Crossfire with 16x16x16x16x at all for lanes
An aluminium metal jacket like the Sabertooth only with real metal this time
More than 10 SATA III ports. 90 degree angled at the edge of the motherboard
ON/RESET button with 20x4 line LCD display backlit on the motherboard
Temperature probes for all the major components
..and more to add just cannot think at the time being

Medicine Hat
Mine (going from what I currently have, so a LGA775 based)
-(E-)ATX formfactor (prefrence on ATX)
-4-6 DDR2 slots
-minimum 2 fully electrical x16 slots first with a 2 slot spacing
-2 pci-e x1 slots
-1 PCI
-10 SATA on a quality controller, right angle at edge of board
-2 eSATA (seperate from the above 12)
-no onboard audio/lan
-no firewire
-6 front panel USB + 6 rear USB
-good cooling on everything
I think thats about it, lol

My dream board already exists, Gigabyte X58-OC. Now if they would do a P67 version I would be happy.

If I were to design a motherboard I'd add some variety to the Nano / Pico ITX market with an AMD Fusion based board. There's enough gamer-oriented motherboards to boggle most peoples' minds :haha:

I'm thinking:
  • AMD Fusion APU
  • Nano or Pico ITX Form Factor
  • Support for 2 DDR3 SO-DIMMs
  • Gigabit LAN
  • 4x USB 3.0
  • PCI-E 16x provided by external connector
  • Mini-PCIE slot for SSD or Wifi card
  • 4x SATA 6Gb
  • Digital audio out and optional external headphone amp
  • HDMI out (most likely on a mini HDMI port as nothing else would fit)
  • Passive cooling

Either that or swap the AMD fusion for a Core i7 2600k and make it as part of a tiny water cooled folding critter
