Can you guys suggest other brands that I can examine further and look into reviews and specs?
Personally, I stuck with the Vaio Z I've had for about two years now. Believe it or not, there was nothing that measured up to it (quad core processor, 256GB SSD, integrated DVD drive, backlit keyboard, 1600x900 IPS semi-matte screen, fully upgradeable, under 4 lbs, 5 hours of battery life, etc).
Right now I would HIGHLY recommend the Vaio Z series as well. They're on liquidation actually: VPCZ2190SCTOF | 13.1" Z Series Laptop - Clearance | Sony Canada
Granted it is VERY expensive but the specs are amazing (no Ivy Bridge, but still...).
The standard Vaio Z is going for $1550 right now and while expensive, it is THE best ultra portable around IMO: Custom Built Laptops | Sony 13.1" Z Series Customizable Laptop | Ultrabooks & Notebooks | Sony Canada | SVZ131190S
That's with a 1600x900 screen, 4GB of memory and an IVB processor. $50 more will get you the drool-worthy 1920x1080 IPS screen.
If you want to go a bit down-market there's also the Sony T-Series. Custom Built Laptops | Sony 13.3" T Series Customizable Ultrabook | Laptops & Notebooks | Sony Canada | SVT131190S
The Vostro 3360 (my personal choice right now since it has a completely replaceable battery and memory): Vostro 3360 Laptop Details
The U47: ASUS U47 Series
Or the oh-so-cool Zenbook Prime: ASUS - Notebooks- ASUS ASUS ZENBOOK UX32VD
